2 Past simple regular verbs


1 We use the past simple to talk about finished actions and states at a past time.

1 I watched a good film last night. 2 She liked running when she was a child.

2 The past simple positive form is the same for all subjects (I, he, we, it, etc.)

I wanted – He wanted You worked – She worked We started – It started

3 When we use the past simple, we often say when the action or state
happened.

She worked in Paris in 2004. The shop opened at 9 a.m. yesterday.

8.2 past simple regular verbs

1 To make the past simple, we usually add -ed to the infinitive form of regular
verbs.

work – worked want – wanted watch – watched

2 For verbs ending in -e, we add -d.

live – lived die – died like – liked For verbs


ending in
3 For verbs ending in consonant + -y, we delete -y and add -ied. vowel + -y, we
simply add -ed,
study – studied marry – married try – tried e.g. play –
played.
4 For verbs ending in one vowel and one consonant, we double the consonant
and add -ed.

1 Put the verb in brackets in the past simple form.

1 lived
They __________ (live) in Mexico when they were young.

2 married (marry) him last year.

My grandfather __________ (die) before I was born.

4 studied (study) at the same university.

Her father __________ (visit) all the art museums when he lived in Italy.

6 stopped (stop) driving to work last year. Now they go by train.
