The evolution of technology and the global shift to online education,
accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic, have revolutionized (overturned,
changed) the way we learn. Traditional classroom settings are being increasingly replaced by online platforms, offering flexibility and accessibility. This trend prompts the crucial question: Can online learning effectively replace traditional methods in the long term? Many researchers have emphasized that online learning plays an important role in the future of education and it can certainly become more effective than traditional education, here is why. Firstly, Online learning stands out for its flexibility. It offers students the convenience of accessing courses and educational materials from virtually anywhere with an internet connection. This accessibility breaks down geographical barriers and opens doors to a diverse range of learners, accommodating individuals who might otherwise have limited access to traditional learning opportunities. A viral illness, a broken limb, a trip or vacation in another country, weather conditions won't stop you on your way to gaining knowledge. In addition, online learning offers various digital tools and resources that improve the learning experience. Studies by the U.S. Department of Education reveal that students engaging in online courses outperform those in traditional classrooms due to multimedia resources like interactive quizzes, videos, and games. They are designed to enhance engagement and attractiveness for students in comparison with heavily textbooks, long classroom lectures, and written assignments. According to IBM, students in online learning courses incorporating multimedia content learn five times more material than students in traditional face- to-face classes. Online education proves to be more cost-effective, saving time for both students and educators. Online programs, devoid of expenses like transportation and housing, offer a more affordable alternative to traditional learning. According to the Online Learning Consortium, students in online education programs save an average of 8-10 hours weekly compared to their peers in traditional classrooms, due to the elimination of commute time and flexible scheduling. This saved time allows for increased productivity, enabling students to allocate it to studying, pursuing extracurricular activities, or fulfilling personal and professional meetings. Also it is more effective from the point of environment, Online courses consume 90% less energy and release 85% less CO2 per student than traditional in-person courses, according to the Open University in the United Kingdom. One of the drawbacks of online learning is the potential lack of face-to- face interaction, that every student needs, because this is where they create their identity. The physical classroom environment facilitates dynamic discussions, hands-on learning experiences, and instant feedback from the teachers, promoting a sense of community and enhancing social skills. Online education still has a lot to develop in order to correct the shortcomings, but we already see how much has changed in our traditional education, the same moodle, google drive platforms, online registers. Therefore, it is worth considering the future of our education as a mixture of online and traditional learning, where students always have access to learning, saving their time and money, not losing interest in learning and always interacting live with their peers, developing social values.
