1 Match the six skills (1–6) to the photos 2 Read the magazine article and answer the questions.
(A–F). 1 Which skill in exercise 1 is not in the article? Write a letter (A–F).
A B 2 How many hours do you need to practise to be very good at a skill? Write a
number.

How to be great!
All you need to do is … practise, practise, practise.
C Do you want to be great at something, but think it isn’t possible? Think again.
Studies in America say that everyone can be great, but you must practise.
The problem is you need to practise a lot. In fact, you need to practise for
10,000 hours.
The idea of 10,000 hours came from Ander Ericsson, a Swedish professor.
He studied children playing the violin. All the children practised for the same
number of hours between the ages of five and eight. When they were eight,
however, some children started doing a lot more practice. At the age of 20, the
total number of practice hours was more than 10,000 for the best violin players.
For the other players, the total number was only 4,000. A lot of practice is a
D very important thing.
A Canadian journalist, Malcolm Gladwell, wrote a book about this topic. Lots of
people read it and most people liked it very much. Gladwell’s ideas are a little
different from Ericsson’s. Gladwell says you need to practise a lot; this is the
most important thing. But he says you also need to be naturally good at the skill
before you start your 10,000 hours of practice.
In 2010, Dan McLaughlin, decided to test the 10,000 idea. The American left his
E job to become a golf player. He didn’t know how to play golf, but he wanted to
try the 10,000 hour idea. He now plays golf for 30 hours a week. If the idea is
correct, he will be an excellent golf player in 2016.
So, what skill do you want to have? Do you want to be fantastic at painting
pictures or speaking another language? Now you know: you just need time!

Welcome to Walking World
Information for walkers
We are happy that you chose your holiday with ‘Walking
World’. Read the information below to help you prepare for
your holiday.

Things to 1
The weather here is usually fine in summer. However, it is
often cold in the mountains and sometimes it can be very
wet. You need walking boots. Please don’t wear normal
shoes because they are not strong. One or two jumpers and
a good jacket are also important. It is sometimes very cold
at night, so gloves are good (yes, even in summer!). Don’t
wear jewellery. It is very easy to lose in the mountains.

4 Things to 2

3 It is a good idea to have a small backpack. You can carry

your camera and a drink. Some people bring an umbrella.
Don’t! They are a bad idea on a windy mountain. Wear the

1 things we don’t need now
Many people have smartphones and more people will
have them in the future. Some people like the old mobile
phone a lot, but the smartphone is now number 1. 80%
of phones in the UK are smartphones, and smartphones are changing the
world. Read on to learn about the things we don’t need in our lives now.
1

2 First, people used their heads. Then they used paper and a pencil, and then
the calculator. Finally, the smartphone arrived with its calculator Apps. Now,
not many people use calculators. We all use our smartphones to do maths.
This is not true, of course, at school. School children use calculators in exams
– they cannot use smartphones. But will this be the same in the future?
2

There were lots of these in the past. We needed them to call friends and
change plans. Lots of people used them. Then the mobile phone arrived
and some people stopped using telephone boxes. Then the smartphone
arrived, and now no one uses telephone boxes. Now these old boxes are used
for different things, for example bank machines, and in London there is a
telephone box library!
3

Many people don’t wear these now. They look at their smartphones when
3 they want to know the time. Some people will always wear expensive watches
because they think they are like jewellery. But we can say goodbye to cheap
watches. We don’t need them now.
4

Yes, a good camera takes great pictures, but a great smartphone takes
very good pictures. It also has video, and lots of people love using video.
So … camera or smartphone? Which wins? For many people now it is the
smartphone. Why? Because the number 1 camera is the camera you have
with you, and people always have their smartphones with them.

I need help! I have a new job and I’m starting next week. It’s a big company and lots of people work there. The
problem is I am very bad with people’s names. Does anyone have any ideas about how to remember them?
I’d love to hear your ideas!
clevergirl Tues-21-Jan 20:33:21
Hi there, suzy,
Don’t worry. I had this problem, but then I read a fantastic book with lots of ideas about how to remember names.
Now, I can remember people’s names from the moment I meet them.
Here is some of the most important advice from the book. First, repeat the person’s name when you hear it. So,
when someone tells you his or her name, use the name. For example: ‘Hi, I’m Jack.’ ‘Hi, Jack, nice to meet you.’
Second, ask the person to spell the name. Think about the spelling and also the shape. For example, are there
any letters that go up or down?
I hope this helps!
suzy Tues-21-Jan 22:54:03
Thanks very much, clevergirl!! Can you give me the name of the book?
jack Wed-22-Jan 09:14:29
Yes, excellent advice, clevergirl. (And you used my name in the example! ☺) I have one more idea that really
helps me. When I hear a name, I think of another word that sounds the same. For example, ‘Jack’ like ‘back’. I
don’t know why it helps, but it really does.
clevergirl Thurs-23-Jan 12:49:32
Sorry about not giving you the title. :-( It’s called ‘And You Are …?’ The writer has a really good blog. (Just Google
his name to find it.)
I love the idea about thinking of a word with the same sound as the name. I’ll try that next time.

Title: Please help me improve my English!
Jan001
Hi everybody! My name is Jan. I live in Germany. I want to improve my English. Do I need to go to an English-
speaking country to learn how to speak it fluently? What different ways of learning English helped you?

Englishlearner432
Hi Jan. There are many different ways to learn English. I don’t think you need to go to an English-speaking country.
I had lessons for two years at a school in my town. Then I went to Australia for one month. It was great! I lived with
a host family so I spoke a lot of English. They were helpful and I learnt a lot of new expressions.

Pedro228
Hello Jan! I think online learning is very good. There are websites where you can find a language partner and talk
to them on Skype. You speak half of the conversation in your language and half of it in English. I tried that and I
really enjoyed it! I spoke a lot of English and I made some new friends! But it didn’t help my grammar so I used
other websites for that. You do grammar exercises and games. There are vocabulary activities too. After you do
the activities, the website tells you the correct answers. There are podcasts you can listen to as well.

Piotr46
I use websites too! There are some really fun ones with vocabulary games. But be careful when you start: not
all language learning websites are good. Some of them are boring and some of them don’t tell you the correct
answers. Try different ones so that you can find a good one for you.
