5 Core Types for Hollow Metal Doors
Honeycomb Polystyrene Polyurethane Steel Stiffened Mineral Core

1. Honeycomb (interior) fire rated up to 3 hours

Honeycomb cores get their name from the honeycomb shaped cardboard that
is hardened by special resins. This material is the most commonly used at
interior openings and is a heavy-duty, durable core. It can be fire rated up to 3
hours. The insulation value is lower than a foam core but it can be used at
exterior openings if a cost effective solution is desired.
[L18 Series, per ASTM C1363] R-Factor = 1.80 / U-Factor = .56

2. Polystyrene (exterior) thermal and fire rated up to 3 hours

The first level of insulated door core is the polystyrene which is a slab of foam
that is placed in the core of the door. Hollow metal doors with this core type
are most often use at exterior openings and can be fire rated up to 3 hours.
The insulation value is much higher than the honeycomb but lower than the
polyurethane.
[L18 Series, per ASTM C1363] R-Factor = 2.64 / U-Factor = .38
3. Polyurethane (not fire rated)
This insulated core is a foam that is injected into the core and expands to fill
all the available space within the cavity of the hollow metal door.
Polyurethane will have the best insulation value that is higher than both
honeycomb and polystyrene. However, a polyurethane door cannot be fire
rated.
[L18 Series, per ASTM C1363] R-Factor = 2.81 / U-Factor = .36

4. Steel Stiffened (sound transmission and stiffening)

Steel stiffened hollow metal doors have steel channels that run the full height
of the door and are spaced about 6″ O.C. across the width of the door. They
are spot welded to the faces and the gaps between the channels are filled
with insulation. These doors are often specified at high abuse areas or can be
used at openings where sound transmission ratings are a concern.
[B18 Series, per ASTM C1363] R-Factor = 2.01 / U-Factor = .50

5. Mineral Core (reduce the fire heat)

Hollow metal doors can be specified with a temperature rise rating which will
require a sheet of mineral board inserted into the door. This material has
properties that reduce the heat that is transferred through the door to the
non-fire side of the opening. Temperature rise ratings can be 250, 450 or 650
degrees where the lower rating of 250 performs better than the higher
ratings. In the event of a fire, this allows building occupants to pass by the
opening unharmed by the heat from the fire

GALVANIZING PROCESS

- Hot dip galvanizing: Zinc chemically bond

with the steel to form zinc-iron alloy layers.
- Final stage: 100% zinc layer
-
1- The thin Gamma layer composed of an alloy that is 75% zinc and 25% iron

2- The Delta layer composed of an alloy that is 90% zinc and 10% iron

3- The Zeta layer composed of an alloy that is 94% zinc and 6% iron

4- The outer Eta layer that is composed of pure 100% zinc

DOORS PAINT
● Waterbase
-- Aquacron 870 Waterborne Direct-To-Metal Acrylic Polyurethane Enamel

Enamel paint is paint that air-dries to a hard, usually glossy, finish, used for coating surfaces that

are outdoors or otherwise subject to hard wear or variations in temperature; it should not be

confused with decorated objects in "painted enamel", where vitreous enamel is applied with

brushes and fired in a kiln

-- PPG 90-1110 Waterborne Satin Direct-To-Metal Acrylic Metal Finish

Acrylic is a transparent plastic material with outstanding strength, stiffness, and optical

clarity. Acrylic sheet is easy to fabricate, bonds well with adhesives and solvents, and is easy to

thermoform. It has superior weathering properties compared to many other transparent plastics

● Alkyd Enamels
Alkyd paints are the modern descendant of oil paints. Instead of pigment suspended in oil, alkyd

paints are typically formed by an alkyd resin dissolved in a thinner

-- PPG Spectracron 100 Series

-- PPG Spectracron 110 Series

● Acrylic and Polyester Polyurethane Enamels

Polyester is a three-component paint that utilizes the resin + catalyst + accelerant. ... Polyester is

specified when high scratch resistance and 100% sheen are required on commercial and

residential projects, and when LEED compliance is necessary

polyurethane polymer offers a tough and durable coating that is highly resistant to extremes of

weather – intense sun, wind and precipitation. The polyurethane also allows the paint to be

formulated to higher gloss levels, offering a beautiful and consistent finish

-- PPG Spectracron 360 Series 2K HS Polyurethane

-- PPG Spectracron 380 Series 2K HS Polyurethane

-- Pitthane Semi-Gloss Acrylic Urethane

ITS NOT RECOMMEND THE USE OF WATER BASED FINISH COATS SUCH AS LATEX, ACRYLIC AND

POLY-VINYL ACETATE EMULSION FINISHES.

PAINT TESTS
 Salt spray testing in accordance with ASTM B117-18

 Condensation testing (humidity) in accordance with ASTM D4585-D4585M-18

 Impact test D2794-93R19

 Film adhesion test in accordance with ASTM D3359-17

FIRE RATED DOORS

Hardware and Seals

To Comply with AS1905.1, all hinged fire doors must be self closing and self latching. (no
latching required on double action doors). To achieve this, fire doors must be fitted with the
correct fire rated hardware, comprising heavy duty hinges, latching device and door closer. Pairs
of doors will require a sequential closing device and concealed autobolt, as well as a closer on
each leaf. Fire rated roller bolts can be used where locking of doors is not required.
Smoke seals are not required on fire doors to comply with AS1905.1, but may be necessary
depending on the building surveyor or fire engineer’s requirements.
