Introduction

Many people are fond of eating sweets especially the

Filipinos. It is proven by our love for delicacies. When you

heard the word “sweets”, it automatically comes with happiness

because they say sweets bring happiness. In every party or any

celebration by the Filipinos, sweet foods will never vanish as

part of the menu. Actually, our day would not be complete without

eating any sweets. Though sweetness is necessary in life, it must

be in moderation. And this project study presents a product that

is something sweet yet you would not worry about having diabetes.

Polvoron is considered as a dessert or snack or what we

called “meryenda” in tagalog in the Philippines. It is also

popular even as a “pasalubong” back home. It is one of the

favorite snacks of kids and even the elders before until now, it

never vanished in the market.

Polvoron originated from Spain. It is derived from the

Spanish word “polvo” meaning powder or dust. It is one of the

influences that were brought to us by the Spaniards when our

country was colonized by the Spaniards for over 300 years. In

Spain, it is a popular holiday delicacy that is available during

the month of September to January.

Originally, Polvoron is a semi-sweet concoction made of

toasted flour, powdered milk, sugar, and butter but nowadays,

many varieties of different flavors are out in the market. Based

from the researchers’ observation, nowadays, only few known

manufacturers are still in the run on the business and manage to

remain in the industry selling/distributing their products in

different supermarkets, malls, convenience stores, etc. Others,

who also sell the said product, are only small time businesses

offering homemade version of it and selling it through public

markets or small time stores.

The researchers think that it is an opportunity to introduce

something new in the industry of polvoron. That is why they

agreed to do a new and unique variety of this product out of Rice

bran and Banana. People might think the product would not be

edible or they might not like the idea of eating something made

of rice bran because of the knowledge we have where it is usually

used to but we, the researchers, want to prove that rice bran is

not just what we think of it is. Rice bran is proven useful in

other way in Japan, Asia, and particularly India. It has been

used for medicinal purposes. These just mean that it is also

edible for humans. And here, in the Philippines, particularly at

the researchers’ home town, the researchers got knowledge that

there had been a study that attempted to use rice bran to make
cupcakes and cookies. This study would make another variety of

product that could be made through the use of rice bran.

Rice bran has been used in food as full-fat rice bran,

defatted rice bran, and in the form of rice bran oil and protein

concentrates. Full-fat and defatted rice bran have been used in

bakery products, breakfast cereals, wafers, as a protein

supplement, binder ingredients for meats and sausages, and as a

beverage base.(Siyanna, 2016)

More than 600 million tons of rice is harvested annually

worldwide and most of its nutritional value is in bran and germ

from rice, according to NutraCea. Rice bran offers various health

benefits due to its content of antioxidants, Vitamin E, B

vitamins, and essential fatty acids. Rice bran's antioxidants

work through different processes to result in positive effects on

the biological system. Rice bran also serves as a natural source

of phytosterols, which provide blood-sugar control, prostate

health and cholesterol metabolism. Rice bran is naturally

lactose-free, gluten-free and hypoallergenic, making it a

tolerable health product for a variety of tastes. (Pellegrini,

2015)

Bran is the hard shell that comprises the outside layer of

cereal grains, including barley, corn, millet, oats, rice and

wheat. Bran provides a good dose of dietary fiber as well as

being a good source of essential fatty acids, minerals, vitamins

and other nutrients. (Bolan, 2016)

Rice bran is used for treating diabetes, high blood

pressure, high cholesterol, alcoholism, obesity, and AIDS; for

preventing stomach and colon cancer; for preventing heart and

blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease; for strengthening the

immune system; for increasing energy and improving athletic

performance; for improving liver function; and as an antioxidant.

Rice bran might help lower cholesterol because the oil it

contains has substances that might decrease cholesterol

absorption and increase cholesterol elimination. One of the

substances in rice bran might decrease calcium absorption; this

might help reduce the formation of certain types of kidney

stones. (WebMD, 2016)

Another special ingredient of our polvoron is banana.

Bananas are one of the most widely consumed fruits in the world

for good reason. The curved yellow fruit packs a big nutritional

punch, wrapped in its own convenient packaging. Some scientists

believe that the banana may have even been the world's first

fruit. (Ware, 2016)

Children and adults alike love sweet, nutritious bananas. By

eating a banana you can indulge your sweet tooth without ruining
your diet. A banana with breakfast will start your day off right

and will give you the energy to make it through to lunch without

eating your snack. (Almond, 2015)

It is a common feature in breakfast menus. It is definitely

with good reason, that provides you instant energy to kick starts

your day, and is said to be very good for the stomach. Most

natural home remedies in India circling around an upset stomach,

call for using bananas as a remedy along with a few other

ingredients. (Borah, 2016)

Bananas combat depression makes you smarter, cure

hangovers, relieve morning sickness, protect against kidney

cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and blindness. They can cure the

itch of a mosquito bite and put a great shine on your shoes.

(NATURALNEWS, 2012)

Bananas are good for bowel regularity and satiety. Adding a

banana to your daily diet has an array of benefits in your body.

Bananas help you reach your weight-loss goals, keep your bowels

healthy, provide nutrients that regulate heart rhythm and have

vitamin compounds for eye health. (Coffman, 2015)

While banana has been proven to have been a good part of the

meal every day, our proposed product will be another way to

consume banana after a regular meal or anytime of your choice.

Rice bran will be combined with banana flour and syrup to produce

our proposed product.

While you probably never imagined that someone would make

flour from pulverized underripe bananas that are just what

happened. This “magical” flour is made from green bananas – and

that’s it, no other ingredients at all. Unlike their more sugary

yellow counterparts, green bananas are loaded with resistant

starch, which is a type of fiber that can’t be digested in the

body – that means that it offers bulk with fewer calories,

according to Rachel Begun, RDN. (Bright, 2016)

Grain-free banana and gluten-free flour not only has fewer

calories than regular flour, but it allows you to use

significantly less in baking, reducing the calorie count of your

breads, cookies, cakes, and any other culinary feats without

losing anything in taste. (Taylor, 2015)

This proposed business aims to prove that the product

Polvoron made of rice bran and banana will be viable in the

market. It aims to revive the slowly dying industry of polvoron

and give people something new that promotes nutritional and

healthy product for everyone’s wellness.

Product
The proposed business is manufacturing of polvoron made of

Rice bran with Banana. The product will be molded and packaged

manually. It will be produced as a circle-shaped polvoron, golden

brown in color due to the process of cooking because it will be

toasted and each piece will be then placed in a macaroons paper

cup alike and finally tied up or wrapped up with colorful

cellophane. Not like the polvoron that we used to know, our

product will be mainly made of Rice Bran and Banana flour and

Syrup. Other ingredients will remain the same such as milk

powder, sugar, margarine/butter and oil. Each raw material is

carefully selected by the researchers themselves, and then it is

cooked and blended to perfection to guarantee customers’

satisfaction. For advanced orders for gift purposes or special

orders, we will offer special packaging though price would be

different than the regular one. Of course, the product could

still be expected to be cheaper than the usual polvoron in the

market.

Differ from the polvoron that we used to know, this polvoron

has more nutritional benefits. The rice bran itself does have
many health benefits. The banana also has its own health

benefits. Combining the two and the other remaining ingredients,

it will be a product that would not only satisfy your hunger or

cravings but also will benefit you in terms of health. Each raw

material has its own important and benefits. The product is made

to satisfy cravings of those who have a sweet tooth or for those

who enjoy eating sweet delicacies.

The business will be open at #149 Brgy. Rizal, Sta. Rosa,

Nueva Ecija. Consumers could directly acquire the product from

the Main Company itself or they could just contact us through

online and Cellphone number. The business is open for delivery

and meet-ups.

The product is planned to upgrade in three months after

opening the business. It will go with the flow of innovation of

the competitors.

Technology

In manufacturing business, good production starts from

ensuring the best quality for the products being produced through

using equipment that can produce quality products. Every single

step in making polvoron should be done with care. The following

technologies are used in making Rice Bran with Banana Polvoron.

The Molder
It is a kitchen tool that help the
maker of polvoron to make a perfect a shape
out of different shapes like oblong, heart
shape and circle.

Gas Stove

It is a stove with gas that is use to

convert raw foods into cooked.

Casserole/Kawali

It is a kitchen tool that is used in

cooking Polvoron.

Laddle/Sandok
It is a kitchen tool that is used in cooking Polvoron that
helps the maker to mix the polvoron to avoid it to burn.

Spoon

It is a utensil consisting of a
small shallow bowl, oval or round, at
the end of a handle. It is used in the
process of molding.

Intended Market Environment

The main targets of this business are individual buyers

located in Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija.

The municipality of Santa Rosa has been chosen as location of the

business because it has a fast economic growth through the years

up to present. There are lots of establishments that are putting

up there. There is also fast growing of population, as of 2010

census, there are 64,548 individuals living there and 53,293

belongs to the age bracket we are targeting. We also chose this

location because of no direct competition existing.

The significance of this proposed business to consumers is

that we will be able to cater them an innovative product at

affordable price which they can enjoy eating while giving them a

lot of health benefits. It may also serve as a gift or pasalubong

to their loved ones.

Business-to-Consumer Market

The main target market of this proposed business are mostly

female, ages between 10 to 16 years old, students. They consider

appearance, brand, taste, price, natural ingredients, and

nutritional facts/value in buying polvoron. They usually buy or

eat polvoron several times a week, as a snack and they prefer to

buy per piece.

Competition

Since every business has indirect competitors, the indirect

competitors of the business will be those businesses/stores that

offer the same product, but not as their primary product, like

Goldilocks, Cakeland, red ribbon, and Rebisco.

Indirect competitors are those businesses that provide

products or services with unique differences but could satisfy

the same needs or wants of the consumers. They are the ones who

have been operating for a long period of time and have gained

customers loyalty over time resulting to gain high sales.

Goldilocks, one of our indirect competitors, is a Philippine

bakeshop and restaurant chain that manufactures and packages

different flavors of pulburon. The Filipino word comes from the

Spanish polvoron. Goldilocks calls it “shortbread cookies.” They

offered classic, peanut, ube, cashew, pinipig, coffee crumble and

cookies n cream flavors of polvoron. Another indirect competitor

is Cakeland which is a family owned bakery and restaurant that

has served Laredo and its surrounding area for nearly 40 years.

Its existence is attributed to our inheritance in the passion for

art and baking. As part of their product, they sold cashew flavor

polvoron. There is also Red Ribbon that started out as a hobby-

induced business in Timog, Quezon City, expanded into a proudly

Filipino-owned and professionally run business. It soon became

one of the biggest and fastest growing bakeshops in the

Philippines and has taken part in every Filipino’s special

moments. Aside from the cakes and breads, red ribbon also

launches ‘mas creamy sarap’ Polvoron for every Filipino home.

They offer three flavors; classic, pinipig and cashew. And the

Republic Biscuit Corporation (Rebisco) which is recognized

pioneer of the Biscuit industry. From a basic Portfolio of

biscuits such as the famous and pioneering Rebisco Cracker

Sandwiches that generations of Filipinos have loved, Rebisco now

carries a wide variety of snack food ranging from nuts and seeds,

cakes, wafer sticks, chips, curls, candies and gums. Milkee

Polvoron, your old-time favorite polvoron, is just one of their

many products. They offer milkee’s chocolate-coated polvoron and

cookies n cream flavor.

In terms of strengths and weaknesses of the competitors, their

strengths are that they are already known in the market and cover

a large number of market shares in the industry. They have made

varieties of flavors to choose from that give consumers a lot of

choices. They already have branches and disributors around and

near the area. In terms of weaknesses, it is their product price.

Considering their brand name, they offer the products at higher

price. In our case, this would be one of our strength. Our

proposed product would be sold at a reasonable price. And another

weakness is that, polvoron is not their only product. They

offered other products that give their customers a wide range of

choice of what product to buy. Their other product might attract

their customer more than their polvoron.

Barriers to entry are always present to new entrant in the

very nature of things such as:

 People are not familiar with our business, it is new. We

haven’t made our own name in the industry yet.

 High competition in the market there are already known

manufacturers of polvoron and they offer much choice of

flavor, this may affect the sales of new entrant like the

proposed business.

 Patriotism of product. People prefer to purchase the product

which they are already used to. It would be a challenge to

attract them to try something really new.

The uniqueness of our product is the ingredient itself. The

ingredient that will be used will give benefits in the consumers

in terms of health nutrition and not just of cravings/hunger

satisfaction. This would be our strength aside from the price.

After a year of business operation, competitors are expected

to come in. As soon as the business became popular, customer will

start to patronize the product.

Competition will be overcome through product development and

continuous innovation as well as by implementing new promotional

activities for future plans.

Industry

The business is classified as a manufacturing industry that

produces polvoron made of rice bran with banana. A manufacturing

industry is the one who produces the product from the raw

materials to the finished product.

The manufacturing company has different categories; the proposed
business will be categorized as a Food Industry under the
manufacturing industry. Processing foods for human consumption
around the world is what food industry does. Food is a
fundamental part of human life. Man cannot live without consuming
nutrients in his life. Food is what gives strength and promote
life. In the Philippines, sweets and delicacies have been famed
for the purpose of finishing meals and giving it as a pasalubong.
This gives the businessman’s idea to establish a food industry
because of the growth of consumers of sweets and delicacies and
it will give a high income.

We see a bright future on the proposed business because of

its uniqueness and health benefits for the consumers. The minimal
polvoron industry in the country is one of our advantage to
become successful in the future because the business will get the
most numbers of the consumers.

More consumers will come in due to the population growth in

the country and it may cause the increase in demand because
according to, Yawson 2009 “Population growth, increasing life
expectancy, and economic growth are expanding the demand for food
products.” It may affect the increase in demand of the product
because of the popularity of polvoron in the market because most
Filipinos indeed like polvoron, according to Alviar 2006,
“Filipinos are very fond of eating delicacies especially
polvoron”. With continuous improvement and promotion the business
will lasts for years.

The demand and supply of the product may affect the price of the
product. The price of the proposed product is cheaper than other,
and because of that the demand for the product may also increase.
In case of not having supply from the suppliers the business
will still continue to run because the ingredients of the
proposed product are also available anywhere in the market and
not seasonal.

Business Model

Profit

This diagram shows the business cycle of rice bran polvoron

manufacturing business. First, the raw materials such as rice

bran will be bought directly from Santa Rosa rice mill and the

banana flour, syrup and other raw materials need will be bought
in Santa Rosa supermarket. After buying the raw materials, the

manufacturing process takes place wherein polbran will be made as

the finished product. When the finished product has been made, it

is ready for selling. And also finished product is also available

to walk-in clients wherein they can directly buy the product in

the store. To gain another income, the business decided to peddle

the product from house to house or barangays, markets and other

stores in Nueva Ecija. After the expenses have been deducted into

the sales, the profit will be remained and after a month the

business decided to divide the profit among the partners.

Marketing and Sales Strategy

A good marketing and sales strategy is essential and important

for every business. It will help to know or become popular the

product in market, also this will give a clear understanding and

direction should do with marketing effort that will reach the

customers in the exact needs. The researchers believe that good

marketing strategy will help the business to develop and become

successful. There are different strategies to be used by the

business in marketing the product such as product, price, place

of distribution, and promotion.

PRODUCT STRATEGY
In product strategy, the business will use rice brand and banana

as the main ingredients in making polvoron which are uniquely

different from the competitors. It will be named as “polbran”

which comes from the combination words of polvoron and rice bran.

Partnership chose this because of the benefits it gives to each

customer. Rice bran is use for treating diabetes, high blood

pressure, high cholesterol, alcoholism, obesity, and AIDS; for

preventing stomach and colon cancer; for preventing heart and

blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease; for strengthening the

immune system; for increasing energy and improving athletic

performance; for improving liver function; and as an antioxidant

and also it is one of the favorite snacks of kids and even the

elders. The product expects to remain in the market in the long

run. The business future plan is to add different kinds of flavor

like berries fruits, teas and other natural health-benefit

ingredients so that the customers will continue to patronize the

product and meet the needs of other customers.

PRICE STRATEGY

Another strategy to be use is Price Strategy. The price per

piece is 3 pesos. Compared to other competitors like NE, Edna’s,

Goldilocks, and others the price of polbran is cheaper than them

because all our competitors are pioneer on the business and they

have higher price in their product that’s why we decided to lower

our price. The proposed business assures the quality of products

without sacrificing the price. In the next 10 years, the business

has the plan to increase or decrease the price depends on the

economic situation that may affect the price of raw materials

needed in the production.

PROMOTION STRATEGY

Another strategy is promotion. In introducing the product, the

business will use free taste. Free food tasting to customer will

persuade them to buy after tasting the product also a good way to

introduce the product in the market. In competitive stage, the

business will use the social Medias like putting up a website,

Facebook page, Instagram and the like because most of the

businesses today are using internet in promoting their products.

In the last stage which is retentive stage, the business will

maintain the quality of the product so that consumers will

eventually refer it to their family and friends. The business

will use the word of mouth because the business believes that

word of mouth is the most powerful yet no expense advertising

strategy a business can use.

Production/Operational Requirements
The proposed business will be located at Barangay Rizal for

manufacturing process and for the physical store of the business.

They will not rent or buy space for the business because one of

the owner’s relatives lends them an unused warehouse for free.

The researchers considered the financial capacity of the firm,

thus, in order to lessen the expenses the owner chose to be home

based.

The annual production will be 126,000 pieces of polvoron. The
production is based from the forecast demand that shows on the
survey conducted.

Regarding the supply, the business decided to buy the raw

material of rice bran directly in the rice miller establishment
in La Fuente, Santa Rosa to maintain its freshness and to assure
that there is no chemical added to it. There is no terms and
conditions provided because the raw material can access easily in
the supplier and the business will only buy twice a week or once
depends on how long will it takes the rice bran lasts.

In order for the business to provide high quality products and

achieve the satisfaction of the customer, they must follow this

following process:

office room is the manager’s office where all the files of the

business are placed and it is 2.25m2 ∈¿¿ . Another area is comfort

room where it can only be use by the owners, its size is 1m2 . the

kitchen room is 3.75m2and it is where the cooking process takes

place. The display area is where the finished product will be

displayed and ready for selling, it is 3m2 in size. The last area

is the parking lot with 3m2in size; it is for the convenience of

the customers to park their vehicles when they go to the store.

Management and Personnel Requirement

Organization and Structure

Every organization has a structure which indicates position

and relationships. The line type of organization is characterized
by direct flow of authority from the top to bottom level. The
proposed business will be a partnership because of the shared
responsibilities the owners can provide. Rather than splitting
the management and taking an equal share of each business task,
they might well split the work according to their skills. No
employees will be hired at the starting year of the business
because the owners will be the one to do the job. For the future
plans when the business is getting known to the public or
increasing in demand, the business plans to hire employees after
five years.

Rice Bran

The proposed business of manufacturing of polvoron made from

rice bran with banana is the first who will sell this kind of

product. The owner ensures that the taste, health benefits and

appearance of the product is uniquely different from the others.

These features can be used as a powerful tool to stay ahead of

the competition. Copying the designs of the products is very

common nowadays, thus, it must be protected. To avoid others of

copying the owner’s product the company must do the following

instructions below:

1. Application for invention patent

File your application for grant of invention patent at the

Bureau of Patents (BOP) of the IPO. You are required to

submit the following in order to get a filing date.

a. Request Form for a Grant of Philippine Patent

b. Name, address and signature of applicant(s); for

non-resident applicant, the name and address of

his/her/their resident agent

c. Description of the invention and one or more claims

* It is advisable to submit sketches that can help

explain the subject invention at the time of filing.

2. Formality examination

Upon receipt of the application, the examiner checks if all

necessary formal requirements for the grant of a filing date

have been satisfied. The date of filing is a vital part of

the patent process because under the current first-to-file

system, it determines, in the event of a dispute with

another applicant for the same invention, who has the right

to the patent.

3. Publication of unexamined application

The application together with the results of the search and

the classification of the field of technology to which the

invention is assigned will be published in the IPO Gazette

(after the expiration of 18 months from the filing date or

priority date).

Once the application is published, the public is given the

opportunity to present observations in writing concerning

the patentability of the invention. The applicant will be

notified about the written observation and given the chance

to comment.

4. Request for substantive examination is conducted upon

request

The request for substantive examination of the application

must be filed within six (6) months from the date of the

publication. If no request is made within the given period,

the application is deemed withdrawn. If the examiner rejects

the registration of the application, the Bureau shall inform

the applicant of the reason. The applicant will be given the

chance to defend or amend the application.

5. Decision to grant patent registration or decision of refusal

A decision to grant the patent registration is given if the

examiner finds no reason to refuse application. In case of

an earlier refusal, the examiner may grant the patent

registration if the applicant complies with amendment or

correction. If applicant fails to do so, the examiner

refuses the application.

6. Inspection of records

The grant of a patent together with other information shall

be published in the IPO Gazette within six (6) months.

Interested parties are allowed to check the complete

description, claims, and drawings of the patent on file with

the Office

7. Appeal

a. Every applicant is given two (2) months from mailing date

of the final refusal to appeal to the Director of Patents.

The decision or order of the Director shall become final and

executory fifteen (15) days after receipt of a copy by the

appellant unless a motion for reconsideration or an appeal

to the Director General is filed together with the payment

of the required fee within the same period.

b. The decision of the Director General may be appealed to

the Court of Appeals. If the appeal fails, the applicant may

take it to the Supreme Court.

Trademark is important in a business not to be copied by

others thus it must be also protected. The company will fill for

registration of trademark in the IPO and must follow the

procedures below:

1. Filing

All initial filings of an application for registration of a

trademark in the Philippines must be addressed to the Director

and shall be in Filipino or English. The requirements include a

request for registration, information regarding the applicant and

the trademark to be registered. Part 4, Rule 400 under the Rules

& Regulations on Trademarks, Service Marks, Trade Names and

Marked or Stamped Containers contain a complete list of the

requirements.

Applications are handled by the Bureau of Trademarks of the

IPO. An applicant number will be issued after a thorough

examination of the application requirements has been performed by

a duty officer and after the filing fee is paid.

2. Search and Examination

The process of searching is done to determine whether there

are existing similar or identical trademarks to the one being

applied for. Afterwards, the application will be examined to see

if it complies with all rules and regulations. The application

will be rejected if it doesn’t.

Some of the common objections involve prior conflicting

rights with another proprietor, conflicts with a well-known

trademark, distinctiveness, descriptiveness, and too broad

description of goods and services, among others.

3. Publication in eGazette
The trademark is published in the IP Philippines eGazette

once the trademark is approved. This is done to let the public

know about the registration and give concerned parties a chance

to oppose it if deemed necessary.

4. Opposition (if any)

The public is given up to 30 days from the issuance of the

eGazette to oppose the trademark. After the Director of the

Bureau of Legal Affairs verifies that there is no notice of

opposition, the office will issue the Certificate of

Registration.

5. Registration

The Certificate of Registration will again be published in

the IP Philippines eGazette for the second time then entered in

the official records. This will be valid for a period of ten (10)

years, after which a request for renewal can be filed.

The entire process can take an average of 18 to 24 months.

It might seem like such a long process to undertake. However,

being registered will give you the peace of mind you need,

knowing that only you have the exclusive rights to use your logo

or trademark.
