Interview 1
Interview 1
After asking many questions I realized the precision and dedication of Sue's work. The way she
incorporates her use of communication into life-saving situations is mesmerizing. What stuck out to me
the most was when she explained how talking to certain people in dire situations can change how they
react. Bring this communication skill into a job where its life or death is very important. When people are
in a scenario where they have to contact 911 they tend to be on edge and do not think through what they
say. The operator’s response to this varies on what is on their plate, being very mild tone and reading
their audience can help calm one down and help them to get a better sense of what the purpose of the
call may be. I brought up the question of why Sue loves her job so much as to where she responded with
“Being able to try and be the light for someone on their darkest days is such a humbling experience.
People call me on their worst days when something is wrong, So being able to aid in the assistance of
such a person is a feeling like no other.” Hearing everything she had to say really showed me how
communication and public relation is such a broad and most of the time a very helpful skill to have in the
real world.
With all of this being said, the communications field really is so vastly different on each end of the
spectrum. It comes in all shapes and sizes which can be displayed in so many different formats, It is
amazing to see even in my one small scenario. Before this interview I was very uneducated on the 911
Operations center and its connection to the safe livelihood of all burlington county residents while also
assisting in the progression of communications and public relations.
For this assignment, I interviewed Sue Morse. She is a public relations advisor and captain at the
Burlington County 911 Operations Center in Westampton, New Jersey. She has served as a member of
this department for twenty-eight years. The purpose of her job is to assist those in need in any way
possible. In other words, a 911 operator is the person who receives phone calls from the 911 emergency
lines and then notifies fire, police, or emergency medical services. As the middleman of all emergency
response situation's I was very excited to take a deeper dive into her use of communications and
knowledge within this field she has perfected over those twenty years.
