PRINTING!!

When printing, be sure to print with “no scaling” or “actual size” checked in your printer options.
You may also consider printing just the pattern piece page with the Tester Square first, and checking
with a ruler to be sure it has printed correctly.

READ OVER ENTIRE PATTERN BEFORE BEGINNING!

PLEASE REFERENCE CUTTING LIST AT THE END OF THE PATTERN FOR PIECES
WITHOUT PATTERN PIECE.

Materials Needed :

• 3/4 yard Exterior Main- quilting cotton 45” wide

• 3/4 yard Exterior Contrast/ Pocket Fabric– quilting cotton 45” wide
• 1 yard Lining fabric - quilting cotton 45” wide
• 4 yards Pellon SF101 – or substitute another woven lightweight fusible interfacing
• 1/2 yard Pellon Flex Foam – or substitute headliner foam, Soft and Stable, or other foam interfacing
• One 13” or longer purse zipper (with larger pull and wide zipper tape)
• One 16” or longer purse zipper
• Two 1” D-rings (or one if you will not need to switch strap sides occasionally)
• One 1” Swivel Clasp
• One 1” tri-glide slider
• Two nylon zippers, one 6” (for lining pocket), one 8” (for exterior pocket) standard coil to match (one
for exterior, one for lining).
• Spray adhesive, or wonder-under for placing foam

PLEASE NOTE: This pattern does not have a traditional lining. The bag is pieced so that each seam is covered
and the lining and exterior are attached at every seam. This means absolutely no saggy linings as each piece fits
perfectly.

Part 1: Pattern Pieces, Interfacing, and Fabric Notes

1A: How to connect pattern pieces. To connect pattern pieces that required splitting for printing, simply
overlap the two matching gray areas (as noted on the pattern piece) one on top of the other, and tape like that.
→ The text orientation can be used as a guide for the top-to-bottom orientation of the pattern pieces, for
placement on directional fabric.

1B: Interfacing Notes

→ All EXTERIOR PIECES, EXCEPT Piece H, will receive TWO LAYERS of SF101. This bag is meant to
be semi-flexible, not stiff, more like a backpack. I designed with this in mind, and I would not attempt adding
foam to any exterior pieces that it is not already recommended for.

→ All lining pieces EXCEPT for the card slot pocket piece will receive one layer of SF101.

→ Placing your FOAM pieces:

For adding your foam to the exterior Back Panel Piece H and to the Gadget Pocket Piece I, first interface
each fabric piece with one layer of SF101.

For the Back Panel Piece H, cut a 1”x8.25” hole in the foam 2”
matching the angle along the right edge, with the innermost
part of the hole 2” in from the edge. Center generally along the
height of the bag. This hole will be for the exterior zipper
placement. We will be turning the bag through that zipper
pocket, so it is not optional. Trim 1/2” off all around the piece.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 2

Then, for Piece I, also trim away 1/2” around all edges. This will ensure that the foam does not go into
your seam allowance and cause bulk.

Fuse the foam on the WS of the appropriate piece (Piece H and Piece I) using fabric adhesive spray, or
wonder under. If you don't have either, cut an extra piece of SF101 to fuse over the foam and hold in
place. Ready to go for sewing!

1C: Fabric Notes

→ In this pattern I would highly recommend quilting cotton for the lining. For the exterior I recommend quilting
cotton, or canvas. If using CANVAS, exclude one layer of SF101 from the stated allotment.

Part 2: Pockets, Straps, and Tabs

2A: Gadget Pocket
→ Collect the two Gadget Pocket Pieces (Piece I), one with foam and the other without. Place the two RST and
stitch the top angled edge.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 3

→ Turn RSO, press the top edge. Make sure all raw edges are
lining up and clip/pin in place.
→ Topstitch the top edge of the pocket and then continue all the
way around to baste the other edges together.

→ Line up the finished pocket on top of your Lining Back

Panel (Piece H). Baste the side edges on to hold.

2B: Prepare the Card Slot Pocket TOP

→ Collect all of the Card Slot pieces.

2.75”
→ Place the card slot piece RSD on your work surface, and starting from one short
end (we will call this the top now) measure down 2.75” and draw a line, then measure
2” down from that line and draw another, then 2 3/8” down from that, then repeat 2”
going another 2”, 2 3/8”, 2”.

2 3/8”

Right side of
fabric
→ Now, place the TOP end toward you, flipping so the fabric is
RSU. Fold the fabric back away from you, directly on the first
line.

Wrong
side of
fabric

1st line

→ Then, keeping the first fold, flip the piece back over to the
WS (top is away from you) and fold back the fabric at the
second line. Press.
2nd
line

→ Now we repeat an accordion fold, folding back and forth at each line until complete. So, flip back over to the
RS and fold away from you on the third line.

→ Flip again, fold toward you on the 4th line. Flip, fold away, flip, fold forward. Give it a good press.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 5

→ Your finished card slot pocket should look like so:

→ Pull aside each card slot top individually and TOPSTITCH

all three. Then, baste the sides in place.

→ Now, interface the back of the finished piece with the Card Slot Interfacing piece.

→ Take one of the Card Slot Side pieces and place RST with one side edge of the card slot piece. Stitch, using
3/8” allowance, the turn RSO and press. Topstitch.

→ Repeat on the other edge with the second Card Slot Side piece.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 6

→ Then, place the Card Slot Backing piece RST with the finished front and stitch the top AND bottom edges.

→ Turn the tube RSO and topstitch the top edge of the pocket.

→ Place the finished Card Slot Pocket down on top of the Front Pocket Backing (Piece F) so that the right
corner is about 3” down from the top edge, and then angle the left edge until it covers all edges of the Backing.
This is usually about 6” down. Pin in place to hold.

3”

6”

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 7

→ From the back of the Front Pocket Backing, baste the edges of the pocket on. Then, trim away any excess
pocket that hangs over the sides. Flip back over, and topstitch the bottom of the pocket down. This finishes the
card slot pocket. And behind you can store other items such as passport or keys. Set aside for later.

2C: Strap
→ Prepare the adjustable Strap Bottom. Take the strap bottom piece and fold one short edge in to the WS by
1/2”
→ Then fold the strap piece in half lengthwise and press to get a center crease. Unfold.
→ Fold both long edges in to the center crease and press.
→ Finally, fold in half. There should now be no raw edges showing except for at one short end.
→ Topstitch along both edges of the strap piece.

Edges Fold in
folded to half and
center topstitch.

→ To add the adjustable slider, first fold the short end with hidden edges
around the central bar of the slider. Pull through about 1.5-2”. Stitch a small
box to secure.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 8

→ Then, pull the free end through the 1” swivel clasp. Once the swivel clasp in on, pull the free end up under the
first slider bar, over the center, then under the third bar. Pull all the way through until the swivel clasp is pulled
nearly tight. Set aside for a moment.

→ Prepare your Strap Top pieces by tapering to 2” at the bottom: Measure in 1/2” from each side at the bottom
of the strap and make a mark. Use a ruler to cut at an angle from the mark to the top corner of the strap. Do so on
both sides and both strap pieces.

2” 3”

→ Then, fold the bottom edge under to the WS by 1/2” on both Strap Top pieces.

→ Place the two pieces RST and stitch using 3/8” allowance along both side edges.

→ Carefully turn the tube RSO and press.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 9

→ Now take the Strap Bottom you prepared and slide the free
end just inside the bottom opening of the Strap Top. Be sure it
is inside by at least 1/2”. Pin/clip to hold.
→ Then, topstitch the Strap Top, going down one side, across
the bottom (catching the Strap Bottom) and back up the other
side. Topstitch a second line just inside the previous
topstitching, again catching the Strap Bottom. This secures the
two together and finishes the strap. Set aside for later.

→ To make the strap anchors, fold the long edges together to create a center crease, then fold both short edges to
the center.
→ Topstitch each folded edge, then wrap around a 1” D-ring and baste closed.

2D: Lining Zipper Pocket

→ Measure 1” down from one short edges of

the Lining Zipper Pocket piece and draw a line 1”
on the WS. Draw another line 3/8” down from
the first. Then measure in 3/4” from each side
to create a centered 6”x3/8” rectangle. 6”
→ Draw a line down the center of the
rectangle, stopping 1/2” short of each end.
Then draw lines to the corners creating a
triangle at each end.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 10

→ Place the zipper pocket piece down RST with the Main Lining Front (piece G) so that the top edge is 8” down
from the top tip of the lining. Pin in place.

→ Now, stitch just around the outer rectangle that you marked. Once stitched,
start a cut along the central line with your seam ripper, then cut with your
scissors along the line and into each corner. Clip as close as possible into each
corner without clipping stitches.

→ Pull the pocket fabric through to the WS and straighten

out the opening edges. Press very well.
→ Take your 6” zip and baste the top zipper tape together to
prevent shifting. Place some Fabri-Tack around the opening
edge and place down the zipper face down so that the teeth
are centered in the opening. If you don't have Fabri-Tack, you
can pin the zipper in place or use double sided wonder tape.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 11

→ Once the zipper is in place, flip back to the RS and topstitch around the zipper to secure. Be careful not to
catch the free edge of the pocket fabric in your stitching!
→ Flip back over to the back and pull the bottom end of the pocket fabric up to meet the top. Stitch the pocket
closed along the three edges to finish. Trim away some of the pocket SA.

2E: Exterior Zipper Pocket

→ Creating the exterior zipper pocket will be just slightly different
from the lining zippered pocket. This is because we will eventually be
turning our bag through the exterior zipper pocket!
→ Take the 9.5”x12” Exterior Zipper Pocket piece and measure 6.5”
down from one of the short edges. Draw a line across, then as you did 6.5”
before draw a rectangle underneath the line that is 8”x3/8”. Also draw
the line down the center with triangles at the ends.

Longer side
to outside! → Take the exterior Back Panel (with the foam) and line up
the rectangle on the Exterior Zipper Pocket piece just over
where the hole in the foam you made earlier is (they should be
RST). Be sure that the longer fabric on the side of the
rectangle faces the outside edge of the bag!

→ Stitch as you did with the lining pocket and install your 8”
zipper in the same manner.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 12

→ This time though, pull the top pocket fabric down to the
bottom edge, rather than the bottom up. The pocket should be
toward the inside of the panel.

Leave bottom
→ When stitching the pocket closed, leave a 7” gap at the open for
bottom by just barely pivoting the corners and making sure to turning! Except
backstitch well. Unzip the zipper. We will make the final for tiny corners.

turning of the bag through this opening! Set aside the finished
Back Panel.

2F: Prepare Zippers With Tabs and Zipper Cover

→ On each zipper (Large and Small) add the zipper tabs like so:
→ Trim the zipper to the exact desired length by trimming away top excess zipper tape and trimming off the
bottom stopper at the exact length from the small top metal stops which remain. The small zipper is cut to 13”
and the long zipper is cut to 16”.

→ Place the tabs' 1.5” edge together RST with the zipper edge and stitch using regular SA. Then fold the tab
outward and topstitch down. Repeat for corresponding tabs on all 3 remaining zipper ends.

→ Make snips in the zipper tape along both sides of both zippers. Do not snip further in than 1/4” for a 3/8”
zipper SA. Set aside.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 13

→ To make the main zipper cover, take the zipper cover piece (uninterfaced) and fold in half lengthwise with
WST. Press, then topstitch and baste other edges closed. Set aside.

Part 3: Construct the Front Zipper Pocket

→ Place the zipper RSD along the top edge of Exterior Front Pocket (Piece A). Be sure the zipper pull is at the
top. Line up the edge of Piece A with the zipper tape edge, starting from the top corner. Baste in place.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 14

→ After basting, place Lining Piece A on top, RSD, and stitch using the full zipper SA and using your zipper
foot.

→ Make a series of notches in the SA. Turn RSO and topstitch.

→ Place the half assembled zipper on top of the Front

Pocket Backing piece (Piece F with card slot pocket)
with both RSU. Line up the free zipper tape edge with
the top edge of Piece F. Baste along the zipper tape
edge.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 15

→ Then, smooth out the assembly with all layers together, allowing any natural overlap of the Piece F that may
happen. Pin in place, then baste all raw edges together. Trim away extra overhang of piece F if there is any.

→ Next, take the Middle Piece (Piece B) and position next to the front pocket assembly as it supposed to lay.
Then, place corresponding edges RST and line up the bottom edge of Piece B with the free zipper tape edge,
RST and starting at the top corner. Stitch using full SA. Go slowly and stitch with Piece B on top.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 16

→ Turn RSO, press, and topstitch. If any Middle Piece fabric overhangs your pocket edges at the bottom, trim to
match.

Part 4: Finish the Front of the Bag

→ To finish up the front of the bag we will add the main zipper, then the side pieces, and finally the bottom.

4A: Middle Piece Zipper and Top Piece

→ Take the current assembly and place down the main zipper RST,
lining up with the free edge of the Middle Piece (Piece B). Be sure
the zipper pull is at the top. I used a double pull which is nice as
you don't need to worry! Baste in place.

→ Next, place the matching curve edge of your Main Lining Front
(Piece G) RSD on top of the basted zipper. Then, stitch using the
full zipper SA.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 17

→ Turn RSO, press, topstitch, then baste the remaining matching free edges together. This creates the very front
of your bag inside and outside.

→ With the current assembly RSU, place the other zipper tape
edge on top of the corresponding curved edge of the Lining Top
Piece (Piece D) which should be RSU. You will be lining up the
long edge. I would suggest making snips in the SA to ease
together. Pin/Clip. Baste on. It will be curvy so I would
recommend flipping and stitching with the lining fabric on top.

→ Once the Lining Piece D is basted, flip back to the front side of the
assembly and baste the Zipper Cover on, with the raw edge matching
up with the zipper tape edge.

→ Finally, on top place the Exterior Top Piece (Piece D) RSD, matching
up the corresponding curved edge with the zipper tape and basted pieces.
This is again the long “bottom” edge. This time stitch using the full zipper
SA.

→ Turn the lining and exterior Pieces D RSO and press away from the
zipper. Topstitch the zipper seam, then with all free edges lined up, baste
the edges together.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 18

4B: Side Piece
→ Once the assembly with both zippers is complete, we will need to add the Side Pieces.

→ Find the Exterior Side Piece (Piece E) and line up alongside the assembly to be sure you are attaching the
correct edges. Make snips along the left edge. The right side edge of the assembly should match up with the
curvier left side of Piece E. Once you can see you have the correct edge, flip so that it is RST, and starting at the
bottom, line up the edges. This piece will curve a lot, so slowly and carefully ease the edges together, allowing
any natural warping/bending.

→ Once you have it clipped/pinned in place, baste the exterior piece in place.

→ Flip to the lining side. Then, place the Lining Piece E RSD, making SURE you are lining up the proper edge.
Line up with the matching edge, again starting from the bottom. The lining and exterior pieces should be RST
with the assembly edge sandwiched in-between. Stitch with your full SA, BUT TAPER in at the top end where
the tip is.

Taper at the
tip!

→ Make notches in the SA. Turn the two pieces RSO, topstitch along the seam, then match free edges and
baste together.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 19

4C: Bottom Piece
→ With the side in place we can now sew on the bottom piece. Starting at the right side corner of the assembly
(at the left when upside down), place the curved edge of the Exterior Bottom Piece (Piece C) RST with the
assembly. Slowly ease the assembly together with the curve of the bottom piece, then baste.

→ As with the side piece, place the lining piece underneath so

that it is RST with the exterior piece with the assembly in-
between. The assembly will get pinched a bit as the fabric
pulls tight. Just slowly line up edges pinning/clipping
frequently and squishing the other fabric inside.

→ Stitch with the full SA. During this part it is so curved that I would suggest holding the piece up as you sew
so that it goes under the machine's foot more easily and smoothly.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 20

→ Make frequent notches in the SA, then turn RSO and press.
Baste the edge closed. I find the bottom seam does not need
topstitching (and it would be difficult to execute smoothly!).

Part 5: Add the Bag Back and Finish

5A: Baste Bag Back Lining

→ Place the full assembly down RSU on top of the Lining
Bag Back (with gadget pocket) RSU. Line up all edges,
starting from the top corners and working your way down and
around. If there is any puckering at the bottom, try to ease it
equally into the corners. Baste together.

5B: Baste Strap and Strap Anchors

→ Find the strap piece that you made earlier and baste the top
edge centered on the top edge of the assembly. Be sure that is is
RST (the front of the adjustable slider should be RST with the
front of the bag).

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 21

→ Baste each strap anchor at each corner of the bag, just above
where any seam is. Be sure the ring faces in toward the center
of the bag, and baste the edge on. I would suggest putting both
anchors so you have the option of wearing the bag across your
body either way, over the right or left shoulder.

5C: Final Piece

→ Find the Exterior Bag Back piece that you had added your zipper pocket to. Be sure the zipper is unzipped!
→ Place the piece RST with the full assembly, squishing the assembly down as you line up the edges starting at
the top.

→ Stitch all the way around, making sure to pivot at the top corners.

→ Make notches along the seam allowance. Trim top corners.

→ Next, reach through the zipper pocket opening and slowly pull your bag RSO. Once it is RSO, reach in
through the opening and straighten out the inside.

“Summit Pack” © Cloudsplitter Bags and Designs 2016 22

→ Pull the zipper pocket fabric out through the zipper, pop out corners, and press the opening inward. Stitch
very close to the opening edge to close it up. Push the pocket back down inside.

→ Give the whole bag a good press, being careful to use a pressing cloth if you are close to any zipper.

TADA! You have a brand new Summit Pack! Clip the strap and go :)
