THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF STUDENTS WITH ADDICTION

TO VAPE AT AANHS STUDENT

Chapter I

1. Introduction

Background of the study

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are known by many different names and sometimes people find it
hard to understand what is really known aboutthem. An e-cigarette is a long tube that usually resembles
a cigarette, a cigar,a pipe, or a pen. Most are reusable, with replaceable and refillable cartridges, but
some are disposable.

The first patent for a "smokeless, non-tobacco cigarette" was requestedby Herbert A. Gilbert in 1963,
but the current device did not appear until 2003.The e-cigarette was invented by Hon Lik, a Chinese
pharmacist, working forGolden Dragon Holdings, now known as Ruyan. The company startedexporting
into major markets in 2005 to 2006. According to Yvette Brazier, thereare now over 460 different brands
on the market.

Electronic cigarettes have been taken up by millions around the worldsince they first appeared on the
Chinese market in 2004. As reportedby The STAR earlier, the Philippines is the 11th worst country for
vapers, according to a survey by the International Network of Nicotine ConsumerOrganizations. As
reported by The Medical News Today, most e-cigarettes have amouthpiece or cartridge, a heating
element, a rechargeable battery, andelectronic circuits. The mouthpiece is fixed to the end of a tube. A
small plasticcup within the mouthpiece holds an absorbent material drenched in the liquid solution. The
atomizer is a heating element that heats the liquid, causing it tovaporize. The solution can then be
breathed in or inhaled. The battery powersthe heating element. This is normally a rechargeable, lithium-
ion battery. Thesensor activates the heater when the user sucks on the device. An LED mayshow when it
is activated. The solution, also known as e-liquid or e-juice, ismade by extracting nicotine from tobacco
and mixing it with a base, usuallypropylene glycol, and flavoring. There is a wide range of flavors to
choose from, with names such as traditional, watermelon, menthol, and cinnamon, vanilla, cherry flavors,
etc.

Scientists have discovered that cinnamon, vanilla, and cherry flavorsreact with propylene glycol, a main
ingredient in many vape juices, to createentirely new chemicals, as cited by a study published in the
journal “Nicotine &Tobacco Research”.

E-cigarettes claim to bypass many of the health risks of tobaccosmoking, and some studies found out
that many people said that e-cigarettesare better than the traditional one as it can help some smokers
to quit.Electronic cigarettes were designed as a replacement for cigarettes. According to American
Vaping Association (AVAs), they have the samepurpose – to deliver inhaled nicotine– but do it in a
completely different way.Cigarettes work by burning tobacco
leaves. The inhalation of the resultingsmoke delivers nicotine to the user, but also 4,000-plus chemicals,
includingthe toxic amalgamation of chemicals known as tar and other chemicals atdangerous levels. In
contrast, electronic cigarettes don’t have tobacco and don’t involve the burning of any substance. A
small heating element inside the deviceturns the liquid into a vapor that is then inhaled through a
mouthpiece.

Electronic cigarettes do not burn like the traditional ones hence thelingering odor and fire hazards can
be avoided. These are made of differentproducts that change its tastes that make the smoking
experience enjoyable forthe potential smokers. The goodness with the electronic cigarette is that
itcomes with vaping devices that are reusable, unlike the traditional one.

But even if vaping can help people quit smoking, it has not been certifiedas safe and effective by
theFood and Drug Administration (FDA), and there isno evidence that it works in the long term. As
claimed byNational Institute onDrug Abuse, vaping or using electronic cigarette is not a safe or
healthyalternative to smoking conventional cigarettes. E-cigarettes may be lessharmful than regular
cigarettes, but this does not mean that they are harmless.

As reported by the American Cancer Society, the e-cigarette aerosol(vapor) that users breathe from the
device and exhale can contain harmful andpotentially harmful substances, including nicotine, ultrafine
particles that can beinhaled deep into the lungs, flavoring such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to aserious
lung disease, volatile organic compounds thatcan cause eye, nose andthroat irritation, headaches and
nausea, and can damage the liver, kidney andnervous system, and some cancer-causing chemicals.

Vaping tripled the harm than smoking cigarette gives to smokers, theDepartment of Health (DOH) in
Central Visayas said as it launched the “Smoking Ban Drive” this month.

A Senate bill seeks to ban the use of electroniccigarettes in schools, government offices, public utility
vehicles (PUVs),churches, and hospitals. Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III filed SenateBill 1538,
seeking to regulate the use and sale of e-cigarettes following President Rodrigo Duterte's nationwide
smoking ban, which so far excludes thedevice.
Thus, this research study focused on determining the Negative Impact of Vaping on Students' Academic
Performance that caused why it has been banned in the Philippines. This proposed study was limited
only to the Students ALFREDA ALBANO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Campus.

Furthermore, this study aimed to promote awareness to the youths about how electronic cigarette
affects their life specifically physical, social, psychological health and financial status. Also, this study is
essential to the parents or families, for this may helpthem to be acquainted with the negative effects of
electronic cigarettes amongtheir children. In that manner, they could create solutions to keep them
awayfrom vaping or using the electronic cigarettes.

In recent years, there has been a concerning surge in the prevalence of vaping among students, which
has significant implications for their academic performance. However, emerging evidence indicates that
vaping can have detrimental effects on students' cognitive abilities, attention span, and overall academic
success.

1.2 Research Problem and Objectives

-To assess the prevalence of vaping among students in a specific location.

-To examine the relationship between vaping and academic performance, considering factors such as
grades, test scores, and academic engagement.

-To identify the factors influencing students' vaping behavior, including peer influence, advertising, and
stress.

-To explore the potential consequences of vaping on students' cognitive abilities, attention, memory,
and overall academic success.

- To propose evidence-based educational interventions aimed at addressing vaping among students and
promoting healthier behaviors.

-To provide policy recommendations for reducing vaping rates among students, including advocacy for
stricter regulations and school policies.

1.3 Research Questions

- What are the reasons why students engage in vaping despite its potential negative impact on academic
performance?

- How does stress level among students relate to their likelihood of engaging in vaping?

- How does vaping affect students' perception of their own academic performance?

- What are the commonly reported reasons why students who use vape believe it does not impact their
academic performance?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

This research study aims to determine the Negative Impact of Vaping on Students' Academic
Performance towards the students of ALFREDA ALBANO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL (AANHS) due to its
chemical contents in terms of:

1. The health risks of the students specifically the:
