SpeechWriting

Sometimes candidates are asked to write a

speech based on the given points. A speech
should begin with a salutation, greeting the
chief guest, the dignitaries present, the other
speakers and the audience. The opening
sentence should reveal the theme of the speech.
Hold the attention of the audience with a catchy
phrase or awitty quip. As you proceed through
the speech, give concrete facts to substantiate
your arguments. Make the speech interesting
by introducing anecdotes, quotations, and
thought-provoking questions. Finally, conclude
the speech by summing up your
arguments in
aclear, concise and logical manner.
EXAMPLE: Write a speech on the topic
Effective English Communication.'
Effective English Communication
LRohini Singh, wish a very good
to our honourable Principal and the morning
teachers.
respected
Today, Ihave the honour of sharing
with you my thoughts and ideas on the topic
'Effective English Communication'. This
subject needs attention owing to the increasing
popularity of English language as the most
effective medium of communication in today's
time.
A recent survey conducted by an
international agency in some of the major
engineering colleges of India revealed that 6
out of every 10 engineering student in India
cannot speak or write even a single sentence
in simple grammatically correct English.
Yes, you may argue on the need to know a
foreign language when we have so many
Indian larnguages which are more important
and should be learnt being an Indian. But I
am sure that you would agree that nglish
is the universal official language of Science,
Commerce, Business and Technology and so
it is mandatory that we know it. In a country
like India, where we have different languages
in different states, English is the unifying force.
Moreover, the engineering students of today
are the technocrats of tomorrow. When they g0
outinto the world, the companiesthat would
want to recruit them would also be testing their
Communication skills. Friends, do you think
any of the companies would want to employ
these students in their companies when they
cannot express themselves adequately? So
make useof every opportunity to practise your
language skills. Speak only in English in school
and to your friends. Be an active participant in
competitions where writing skills are 'needed.
Reading also helps to improve your language
and vocabulary skills. Remember, school is the
one place where you can learn the skills of
communication. Everyone must remember that
effective English commnunication is a necessary
tool that would decide your future.
With this, I conclude my speech. Iwant
to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone for
lending me apatient ear.
REPORT WRITING
Beginning a Piece of Directed Writing: Read
through the question and the given outline and
select the points that can be grouped together.
Bracket these together and dividethe points into
suitable paragraphs. Youcan add more details if
necessary. However, before adding more points,
remember that each of the given points must be
included and amplified. Add moreinformation
only if you feel it is absolutely pertinent to the
issue in question. Be careful while elaborating
on each point as the specified length for this
exercise is 300 words. Although there is
limit, try to
penalty for crossing the word keep
y'our composition close to the prescribed limit.
Organisation: Organising the given points
in a logical and coherent manner is the L
to writing a successful report. Arrange the
data provided in such a way that the opening
sentence becomes the subject of the repore
The points should be dealt with in an order
of decreasing importarnce, i.e., the most
important point should be dealt with at the
very beginning.
The best way to writea report is to answer
the following questions in the following order:
first, Whoor What, then When and Where and
finally, Why and How. Divide the content into
3or 4 paragraphs. At the end, summarise the
points in such a manner that it allows the
readers to get a clear idea about the event or
issue and enables them to form opinions and
arrive at a definite conclusion.
Language and Style: Before attempting
Question 2, it must be remembered that the
manner in which Question 2 should be dealt
with is vastly different from the way in which
Question 1 is handled, although both the
questions deal with composition writing.
This question demands formal treatment.
The language must be formal and the tone,
matter of fact and not overly ornamented
with figures of speech and stylistic techniques.
The comnposition must be writen in the third
person using the passive voice as far as
possible. Write short sentences and avoid using
conjunctions to prevent the style of the report
from degenerating into an informal one.
Keep in mind that the purpose of the narrator
in areport is merely to present the facts in a
logical manner. Use your five senses to bring
the picture vividly in front of the reader. Do
not become emotionally involved in the issue
and never force your views on the reader.
Let the reader draw his/her own conclusions
and form his/her own opinions. Your job is to
describe the event or oCcurrence. So do it to
the best of your ability without unecessary
frills and decoration.
Title: Atitle or headline is an integral part of
any report. Generally the headline is provided
in the question paper. Use the same for your
report. If atitle is not given, then think of a
suitable heading for your report. Never submit
a reportwithout a suitable heading. Remember
that the title should be such that it arouses the
interest of the reader and persuades him/her
to read through the article.
Handwriting and Spellings: The same rules
apply as those for Question 1.
Revision: The same rules apply as those for
Question 1.

Kolkata, 30 March 2016
A cheerful spring morning on the 29th of

school children, when the private school bus
in which they were travelling plunged into the
Hooghly river at around 7:30 a.m. The accident
occurred when the driver of the school bus
sharply swerved his vehicle to the left in an
attempt to avoid a head-on collision with a
private car that was coming from the opposite
direction at a great speed.
As the driver sharply swerved to the left, he
lost control over the steering wheel and the bus
crashed through the railings of the Bally bridge
