EGYPTIAN ART
Started between c. 6000 - c. 3150 BCE, artworks in this era had something to

NLY
do with religion. Images of animals, humans, and supernatural figures engraved on
rock walls were believed to be the source of balance and harmony, called as ma’at
(may-et). Egyptian art is heavily linked to perfect balance for they mirror the ideal world
of Gods. Egyptians believed that gods and spirits live in the statues they crafted.

Artists in this era use stone, wood, ivory, limestone, copper, bronze, gold,
silver, and even lapiz lazuli (a beautiful blue stone) in creating their works. Strict rules
are followed in their painting. One of which is showing the most prominent features of

YO
the human body from its visible angle. Sculptures produced in this time are stiff yet
formal and stylized. Their faces faced forward, left foot slightly ahead from the right,
and without open spaces curved.
The remains of pharaohs are mummified because Egyptians believed that the
human body should be preserved properly for the Ka (soul) to use in afterlife. Holy
carvings called as hieroglyphics are seen on pyramids and tombs of the royals.

OP
Egyptian civilization is divided into three periods: Old, Middle and New
Kingdom.
