EXAM DETAILS
Exam Board: Pearson Edexcel* (www.pearson.com)

Specification: International GCSE, Specification A (4MA1).

Notes:

• This record book is for the IGCSE (not the GCSE) – most of the
topics are the same, but there are a few differences.

• Students sit the two higher tier papers - 1HR and 2HR

• Each paper is two hours

• The papers are of approximately equal difficulty and any of the

topics could be covered in either of the papers.

• Topics covered in detail within the 1HR paper are unlikely to be

covered again in the 2HR paper, but it is possible!

*In the past the exam board was known as just ‘Edexcel’.

EQUIPMENT LIST
FOR MOST OF YOUR WORK:
Black pen – preferably two
Calculator – with a ‘proper’ fraction key

FOR DRAWING:
Pencil (HB) – preferably two; suitably sharpened.
Rubber
Ruler (15 cm or more) – undamaged edge
Protractor – one make of protractor is sometimes different to
another, so make sure that you are familiar with the protractor that
you are going to use.
A Pair of Compasses – with their own short pencil. Make sure that
the hinge is not loose and that the pencil is sharp.

Drawing Hints:
Do not rub out the compass arcs when you construct bisectors,
triangles or quadrilaterals.
Make sure that your final lines (in constructions and on graphs) are
quite dark – they need to visible after your answers are scanned into a
computer and sent to the examiner.

OTHER EQUIPMENT:
Clear pencil case
Spare calculator – with a ‘proper’ fraction key
Tracing paper – this will usually be provided; ask for it if you need to.

CALCULATORS

A scientific calculator is vital for IGCSE Maths.

Make sure that you are familiar with the calculator that you are going
to use.
If it does not have a ‘proper’ fraction key, buy a new one!
Be sure that the battery is strong – if there has been any indication
that the battery is getting weak, replace it.

Resetting your calculator:

It might be a good idea to reset your calculator before your exam –
this will restore the factory settings and make sure that the values for
sin, cos and tan are correct.

Press ‘SHIFT’, ‘9’, ‘3’, ‘=’ and then ‘AC’

Note that resetting your calculator will return it to ‘STANDARD’ mode

which displays answers as fractions and surds, rather than displaying
answers as decimals.

REVISION ADVICE
The best way to get good at maths is to practise, but there are also
facts and rules that you need to take the time to learn.
It could be a good idea to write down the maths facts and rules that
you need to know on small cards and make sure that you learn them –
you could ask someone else to test you!

Some of the things that you need to learn:

Facts:
Angle facts – particularly for interior and exterior angles in polygons
Words – such as the meaning of alternate and corresponding angles
Circle theorems – learn them word-for-word
Symbols – particularly the symbols used for sets and inequalities

Rules: BEST ADVICE

For indices – including use of negative, EVER:
fractional and zero powers DO AS MANY PAST
For manipulating surds QUESTIONS AS
For differentiating POSSIBLE
Methods:
Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions
Converting recurring decimals into fractions
Constructing bisectors, triangles and quadrilaterals
Solving simultaneous equations
Finding the coordinates of a turning point
… and many, many more…

A lot of the methods can take a long time to learn fully and you should
aim to be quite good at them many weeks before your exam so that in
the last few days you are in a good position to master them.

what they mean. Here is a start…
