SPACE RUBBISH
Astronauts were working on the International Space Station 354 kilometres above Earth. Suddenly,
they saw an object in space. It was a piece of rubbish from a satellite and it was travelling very
quickly. “It’s going to hit us!” said one of the astronauts. Fortunately, the rubbish didn’t hit them.
But what will happen the next time?
If rubbish hits the space station, the astronauts will be in danger and it will take years to repair it.
Space rubbish comes from satellites and space shuttles. On Earth, these small pieces
of rubbish aren’t dangerous, but in space they travel at 28,000 kilometres an hour. If
a piece of rubbish hits a space shuttle, it will probably destroy it. The problem is
worse now because there are so many satellites in space. In 2009, two satellites hit
each other and broke into hundreds of pieces. Some of this rubbish will fall to Earth,
