Biological Process Design for Wastewater Treatment (BPD)

Jan-May-2024

Assignment 5

1. (a) Estimate the volume and dimensions of an SBR using the following design data

Influent data

Design flow rate: 22,700 m3 /d

bCOD: 220 mg/L
rbCOD: 50 mg/L
Total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN): 24 mg/L
NH 3 -N: 19 mg/L
Total suspended solids (TSS) :200 mg/L
Volatile suspended solids (VSS):170 mg/L
Biodegradable volatile suspended solids: 80 mg/L
Minimum sustained temperature: 20 ˚C
pH: 7.2
Alkalinity: 200 mg/L as CaCO3

Effluent discharge standards

bCOD ≤ 20 mg/L
NH 3 -N ≤ 1.0
TSS ≤ 10 mg/L

Assume MLSS = 3,000 mg/L, MLVSS = (0.8) MLSS, NOx = 80% of TKN, and
ϴc = 20 d (b) Check the assumed react plus aerated mix time used to design the SBR is
sufficient for notification or not. Assume all biokinetic parameters at 20 ˚C.

2. Two super-rate trickling filters are designed to operate in parallel to treat municipal
wastewater. The influent flow rate and BOD5 concentration to the plant are 4000 m3 /d and 210
mg/L. The BOD5 removal efficiency of primary sedimentation basin is 35%. The critical
operating temperature in the winter is 16 ˚C. The filter depth is 2.5 m and recycle ratio is 2.
The pilot plant data with a plastic media at a similar filter depth gave the BOD5 removal rate
constant k @ 20˚C = 1.3, exponent n = 0.5 and effluent BOD5 concentration = 30 mg/L.
Calculate (a) filter hydraulic loading, (b) filter diameter, and (c) filter organic loading. Use the
simplified filter equation proposed by Eckenfelder.

3. A membrane bioreactor consists of an anoxic tank followed by an aeration tank. The influent
wastewater is added to the anoxic tank. The aeration tank is divided into two compartments.
The first compartment is 75% of the total aerobic volume and is aerated with the fine bubble
diffuser, and the second compartment contains the membrane separation cassettes and is
aerated with the coarse bubble diffusers. The total aerobic volume is 4000 m 3. The return
activated sludge flow is from the membrane separation compartment to the anoxic tank and is
at six times the influent flow rate. The MLSS concentration in the membrane separation
compartment is 12,000 mg/L. what is the daily waste sludge flow rate from the return activated
sludge line, to maintain an SRT of 10 days?

4. A design wastewater flow of 10 MLD per day containing 175 mg/L BOD (in the primary
effluent) is to be treated in a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) reactor (a) What is the
BOD loading rate to the reactor in g/day? b) If the MBBR carrier has a specific surface area of
600 m 2 /m 3 and design carrier fill % of 40%, what would be the required volume of carrier
and required MBBR tank volume? Assume organic loading rate of 7.5 g/m2/d. (c) If the design
carrier % void space is 60%, what would be the volume of liquid in the MBBR reactor? (d) If
the design peak hour factor is 4, calculate the average hydraulic retention time at design average
wastewater flow and at design peak hourly wastewater flow.

5. A three-stage RBC is designed to treat primary settled wastewater. The disk area per 7.5 m
shaft length is 9000 m2 in each stage. The diameter of disks and submergence are 3.5 m and
40%. The influent flow and BOD5 concentration are 2000 m3 /d and 130 mg/L, respectively.
The flow is perpendicular to the shaft. The clearances between the disks in adjacent stages and
at the ends from the walls are 0.75 m. The bottom clearance between the disks and the floor is
0.3 m. Assume the required volume of disk housing is at least 0.005 m3 /m2. Calculate (a)
hydraulic loading, (b) surface organic loading, (c) dimensions, volume, and retention time of
the disk housing
