The document discusses the major components and systems of an automobile including the chassis, body, power plant, engine, transmission, drivetrain, steering, suspension, brakes and wheels. It provides details on how components like the clutch, gearbox, propeller shaft, differential, axles and universal joints work to transmit power from the engine to the wheels. The summary also mentions topics like steering mechanisms, hydraulic braking systems and the function of the hull in a vehicle.

AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING
An automobile is a self propelled vehicle which is used to transport
passengers or goods upon the ground. Mobile means which can move. Automobile means which itself can move. The two major assemblies of automobile are Chassis and Body. Chassis contains all the major units necessary to propel the vehicle and control the emotion of vehicle. The chassis is sub-divided into running gear and power plant. The running gear includes frame, steering system, suspension system, brakes, wheels and tyres. Power plant includes engine assembly and power transmission assembly. Clutch is located between the engine and gear box. The device which engages and disengage the power from engine to gear box is called clutch. Gear box is located between the clutch and propeller shaft. Universal joints are used to make a flexible connection between two rigid shafts of an angle. There are 2 universal joints in a transmission system. One joint is connected between transmission main shaft and propeller shaft and another one is connected between differential and propeller shaft. Propeller shaft is connecting rod for gear box and differential. Differential is situated at the end of propeller shaft and in between two rear axles. The functions of differential are, - Turn the power at right angle from the propeller shaft to rear axles. - Provide relative motion to the rear wheels when the vehicle takes a turn. The power obtained from the differential is transmitted to road wheels through rear axle half shafts. Front axle is used to carry the weights of vehicle and also facilitate suspension and steering system. Wheel assembly consists of hub disc (spokes), rim, tyre and tube. The circular portion of wheel on which tyre and tube are fitted is called as rim. Air is forced under pressure inside the tube through non return valve. Non return valve projects outside through a hole in the rim. PR means ply rating. Automobile engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with everything about automobiles and practices to propel them. The static balance of front wheels can be made with the wheels installed on the vehicle using the electronic balancer. For rear wheels only static balance will be given. Steering system is used to convert the rotary movement of steering wheel into angular turn of front wheels. Davis and Ackermann are the two types of steering gear mechanisms. Hydraulic braking system was works on Pascal’s principle. Pascal’s principle states that ‘the confined liquid transmits pressure without loss equally in all directions’. The part of the vehicle which holds the passengers and the cargo load to be transported is known as hull. Seats are not a part of chassis. In an automobile engine, the temperature of the piston will be more at the crown of piston. Connecting rods are normally made in form of forged I-section. As the no. of cylinders decreases on multi-cylinders engine increases the power to weight ratio.
