Past Simple Irregular Verbs


Past simple is the tense used to express situations that occurred in the past and are
now over. One important thing to note is that there is no rule to form the past simple
irregular verbs, you just have to memorize them.

Affirmative Sentences
There are no specific rules to form the past simple affirmative of irregular verbs. Some
examples are:

Go Went

Eat Ate

Take Took

In sentences, we use the following structure:

Subject + past simple verb + complement.

For example:

I / you / he / she / it / we / they slept too many hours yesterday.

I / you / he / she / it / we / they wrote a novel last week.

Negative Sentences
In negative sentences we use:

Subject + auxiliary didn’t + verb in infinitive form + complement.

For example:

I / you / he / she / it / we / they didn’t sleep too many hours yesterday.

I / you / he / she / it / we / they didn’t write a novel last week.

Interrogative Sentences or Questions


In interrogative sentences we use:

Auxiliary did + subject + verb in infinitive form + complement?

Let’s see some examples of questions and short answers:

Did I / you / he / she / it / we / they buy a book?

Yes, I / you / he / she / it / we / they did.

No, I / you / he / she / it / we / they didn’t.

For Wh – Questions, we use the following structure:

Wh-question word + did + subject + verb in base form + complement?

Some examples are:

What did you do yesterday?

Where did she go last night?

Who did he meet two days ago?

When did she write a poem?

Expressions
For the past tense, we can use some past time expressions. We can put these past time
expressions at the beginning or at the end of the sentence. When used at the begin-
ning of the sentence add a comma (,). These expressions are:

last
last Monday / last year / last week / last month

Examples:
Last week, I went to the zoo.
I bought a new computer last month.
ago
three hours ago / a month ago / four days ago / a year ago

Examples:
Four days ago, I drank a delicious juice.
My sister did her project three hours ago.

yesterday
yesterday / yesterday morning / yesterday afternoon / yesterday night

Examples:
Yesterday afternoon, my brother broke the window.
She wrote a poem yesterday.
