LAB REPORT 3

Aim: To connect a fluorescent lamp with its accessories.

Theory:

A fluorescent lamp or fluorescent tube is a low pressure mercury-vapour gas-

discharge lamp that uses fluorescence to produce visible light. An electric current in
the gas excites mercury vapour which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that then
causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb to glow. A fluorescent lamp
converts electrical energy into useful light much more efficiently than incandescent
lamps. The luminous efficacy of a fluorescent light bulb can exceed 100 lumens per
watt, several times the efficacy of an incandescent bulb with comparable light output.
Fluorescent lamp fixtures are more costly than incandescent lamps because they

require a ballast to regulate the current through the lamp, but the lower energy cost

typically offsets the higher initial cost. Compact fluorescent lamps are now available in

the same popular sizes as incandescent and are used as an energy-saving alternative in

homes.

12. Hand drilling machine ¼ cap 1 No

Procedures:

1. Check the chock for its short and pen with a test lamp as shown in Fig 1.

1. Normal glow Internal shot circuit

2. Dim Good working

condition

3. No glow even after checking the Open circuit in the

leads and connection chock

2. Check the starter with a series test lamp as shown in the Fig 2. And observe the

flickering of the lamp which indicates good condition of the starter.

3. Assemble the following fluorescent tube accessories in the fitting base as shown

in Fig 3

i. Holder for tube ii. Starter-holder iii. Choke.

4. Connect the accessories as shown in the Fig 4 (for a single tube light) and also

install the tested starter.

Fig.4: Tube light connection

5. Test the filament on both side of the florescent tube for its continuity as

shown in Fig 5. Discard the fluorescent with open or fused filament in either

side.

Fig.5: Testing the tube.

6. Fix the bulb in the holder.

i. Firstly, we have to make sure that the slot in the inner part of the holder is

turned to the proper position

ii. Then insert both the ends (pins) into the holder of the fittings on either side of

the tube. One end is shown in the Fig 6.

iii. Push the socket pins all the way into the fittings until we feel we can turn the

tube in the socket.

Precautions:

1. Always connect the accessories to be tested in series with the test lamp.

2. Connection should be right and tight.

3. Always use 40 watt of test lamp if possible.

Result:

The testing the tube light accessories like choke, starter and filament are done ant it

is found that all the tube accessories are in good working condition and assembling of a

fluorescent lamp with its accessories is successful.

The test result is as follows:

1. Choke Dim In good working

condition

2. Starter Bright In good working

condition

3. Filament of tube Bright In good working

condition

Conclusion:

There are many different types of fluorescent lamps but the work is in same basic

way. When electrons strike the mercury vapour, the mercury atoms emit rays of

ultraviolet light. When these invisible UV rays strike the phosphor coating, the

phosphor atoms emit visible light.

From this experiment we got the basic ideas to test the tube light accessories like

choke, starter and filament. It is very important to know how to test the accessories

because if our tube light fails at home, we can do the maintenance ourselves and able

to help others those who have the similar problem at their house too.
