The children found a man at the station who the passengers thought was a prisoner. The children identified he spoke French from school lessons. Their mother took the man home after speaking to him in French. Roberta found her father's clothes in a trunk and worried for his safety. The man told the mother he was wrongly imprisoned for writing about the poor, then fought in the war and was trying to find his family.

Chapter 5 Prisoners and Captives

01) The children’s mother had gone to Maidbridge so the kids


went to the station to pick her up an hour before her train arrives
so that they can spend that wet and rainy day in the station
because they loved the station very much.
02) While the children were waiting for their mother, they
played an advertisement game.
03) While they were waiting, there was a signal that showed a
train was coming up and it was their close friends, the engine
driver and fireman. After a few courtesies they went off
04) When they returned back they saw that a crowd of
passengers have been gather in one area particularly looking at
something or someone.
05) As the children were curious they went to see what was
going on.
06) As they arrived the passengers started to state that the man
might be a prisoner and that it would be a police case and with
that the station master came to that spot and requested the
people to leave so he can handle it but the people didn’t move.
07) Then the man started to speak in French and peter was the
one who identified that it was French as the children used to
study French during school
08) When the man realized that the kids were able to
understand he started to speak French in long words and it was
difficult for the children to catch up.
09) The station master was about to take this man and lock him
up and hand him over to the police, when Bobbie requested not
to.
10) Then Bobbie requested the station master to take this man
to his room because there mother knew the French language
11) The children wanted to know from which country he was
from so peter go an idea and showed foreign stamps. The mas
was Russian as he chose the Russian stamp
12) And just then their mother’s train was signaling. Station
master, Peter and Phyllis went to pick their mother while Bobbie
stayed with the man.
13) Their mother came and talked to the man and said to the
station master that she would take him home and that he meant
no harm.
14) Bobbie went to fetch the doctor to check on the man’s
health as he was coughing so much.
15) Later that night, their mother opened a trunk that had
men’s clothes in it. Bobbie who came with some woods to put to
the fire saw that the clothes were of their father and worried why
were his clothes here and if he was dead
16) Roberta asked their mother, and the mother said that it was
not true but didn’t say anything more
17) The children were long awaiting to know what the man said
to their mother and it seems that this man was a writer and once
he wrote a book about poor people and him and his family was
put in prison. Later after 3 years he volunteered for the war.
There he got to know that his family was in London so he fled but
unfortunately he was robbed so he ended like that.
18) And the night ended by them wishing for the man to meet
his family.
