Assignment (2) Model Answer

Problem 1:

i) A
0.31
B
0.01 0.12 0.08
0.09
C 0.39

ii)
(A B) =0.09+0.39+0.12+0.08=0.68
or (A)+ (B) - (A B) =0.6+0.2-0.12=0.68
(A C) =0.01+0.09+0.39+0.12=0.61
or (A)+ (C) - (A C) =0.6+0.1-0.09=0.61
(B C) =0.01+0.09+0.12+0.08=0.3
or (B)+ (C) - (B C) =0.2+0.1-0.00=0.3
(A B C)=0.01+0.09+0.39+0.12+0.08=0.69
or 1-0.31=0.69

iii) (A B C) =0.6+0.2+0.1-0.09-0.12-0+0=0.69

iv)
(A B′)=0.09+0.39=0.48 ( in A but not in B )
( A′ C)=0.01 ( in C but not in A )
( B′ C′)=0.39+0.31=0.7 ( not in B nor in A )
v)
(A B)= (A B) / (B) =0.12 / 0.2 =0.6
(A C)= (A C) / (C) =0.09 / 0.1 =0.9
(B C)= (B C) / (C) =0
vi)
- B and C are mutually exclusive
- (A) x (B) =0.6 x 0.2=0.12= (A B)
So, A and B are independent
Also, (A B) =0.6 = (A) (occurrence of B doesn’t affect probability of A )
