Problem 3 [30 Marks]

A gas-turbine power plant operating on an ideal Brayton cycle has a pressure ratio of 12. The gas
temperature is [x] K at the compressor inlet and 1500 K at the turbine inlet. Use the air-standard
assumptions with the following properties for air: k = 1.4, cp = 1.005 kJ/kg-K, and cv = 0.718 kJ/kg-K.

1. Draw a T-s diagram for the cycle showing all states, and determine:
2. Gas temperature at the inlet to the compressor.
3. Gas temperature at the exits of the compressor and the turbine
4. Back work ratio, in %
5. Thermal efficiency of the cycle, in %
6. Daily energy output of the gas power plant in MWh assuming that it operates for 12 hours each day and
the gas flow rate is [y] kg/s.

Here, [x] = [300+((A+B)2)/6)] and [y] = [50+((A+B)3)/70)]

where A is the fifth digit in your KFUPM ID from left and B is the sixth digit in your ID from left. If
your ID is 201612345, A = 1, B = 2.

Problem 4 [20 Marks]

A gasoline fuelled engine produces a maximum power of 180 kW when the fuel is burned stoichiometrically
with air. The thermal efficiency of the engine at this maximum power is [x]%. The stoichiometric air-fuel
ratio for gasoline is 14.6 and methanol is being considered as an alternate fuel for this engine. Assume a
combustion efficiency of 85%. The low heating value of gasoline is 42,500 kJ/kg and the low heating value
of methanol is 20,000 kJ/kg. Determine:

1. The thermal efficiency of gasoline engine at 180 kW, in %.

2. The stoichiometric coefficient ‘b’ if the balanced reaction equation for methanol with stoichiometric air
is:
CH3OH + b × (O2+3.76 N2) = CO2 + 2 H2O+ b × 3.76 N2
3. Maximum power from this engine, in kW, if methanol (CH3OH) is used under stoichiometric combustion
with the same thermal efficiency. The molar mass of C, H, O, and N atoms are 12 kg/kmol, 1 kg/kmol, 16
kg/kmol, and 14 kg/kmol. The molar mass of air is 29 kg/kmol.
4. Rates of gasoline and methanol consumption, in kg/s for the maximum power operation assuming the
same thermal efficiency for gasoline and methanol fuelled engines.

Here, [x] = [30+((A+B)2)/40)], where A is the fifth digit in your KFUPM ID from left and B is the sixth
digit in your ID from left. If your ID is 201612345, A = 1, B = 2.
