15.97 Determine the total angular momentum HO for the system of
three particles about point O. All the particles are moving in the
x–y plane.

SOLUTION

HO = 𝑟 × 𝑚𝑣

= rA × (mA VA) + rB × (mB VB) + rC × (mC VC)

15.107 The small cylinder C has a mass of 20 kg and is attached to the end
of a rod whose mass may be neglected. If the frame is subjected to a
couple M = (8t2 +5) N-m where t is in seconds, and the cylinder is
subjected to a force of 60 N, which is always directed as shown,
determine the speed of the cylinder when t = 2.5 s. The cylinder has
a speed v0 = 3 m/s when t = 0.

SOLUTION

Principle of angular impulse and momentum,

(Hz)0 + 𝑀𝑧 𝑑𝑡 = (Hz)1
m r0 v0 + 𝑟 𝐹 𝑑𝑡 = m r1 v1
3 2.5
20 (0.75) (3) + 60 (5) (0.75) (2.5) + 0
8𝑡 2 + 5 𝑑𝑡 = 20 (0.75) (v1)

v1 = 11.11 m/s Ans.

15.108 A child having a mass of 50 kg holds her legs up as shown as she
swings downward from rest at θ1 = 30°. Her center of mass is
located at point G1. When she is at the bottom position θ = 0° she
suddenly lets her legs come down, shifting her center of mass to
position G2. Determine her speed in the upswing due to this sudden
movement and the angle θ2 to which she swings before momentarily
coming to rest. Treat the child’s body as a particle.

SOLUTION
From G1 and G2 (First before θ = 30°),
Conservation of momentum energy (Datum at 2.)
T1 + V1 = T2 + V2
1
0 + 50 (9.81)(2.8 − 2.8 cos 30) = × 50 × 𝑣2 2 + 0
2
𝑣2 = 2.713 m/s (before her leg coming down)

15-108. Continued

If θ = 0°, CG is changed from G1 to G2.

Conservation of angular momentum, 𝐻2 = 𝐻2′
𝑚 𝑟2 𝑣2 = 𝑚 𝑟2′ 𝑣2′
(50) (2.80) (2.713) = (50) (3) (𝑣2′ )
𝑣2′ = 2.532 𝑚/𝑠 Ans.

From G2 and G3 (Just after θ = 0°)

Conservation of Energy (Datum at 2.)
𝑇2′ + 𝑉2′ = 𝑇3 + 𝑉3
1
× 50 × (2.532)2 +0 = 0 + 50 (9.81)(3 − 3 cos 𝜃2 )
2

𝜃2 = 27° Ans.

15.110 A toboggan and rider, having a total mass of 150 kg, enter
horizontally tangent to a 90° circular curve with a velocity
of vA = 70 km/h. If the track is flat and banked at an angle
of 60°, determine the speed vB and the angle θ of “descent,”
measured from the horizontal in a vertical x–z plane, at
which the toboggan exists at B. Neglect friction in the
calculation.

SOLUTION

vA = 70 km/h = 19.44 m/s

Datum at B: Conservation of Energy

15-110. Continued

𝑍𝐴
tan 60 = 𝑍𝐵
5 tan 60 = 2
zA = 8.66 m
zB = 5.196 m

h = zA – zB = 5.196 m

Substituting in Eq. (1), vB = 21.9 m/s Ans.

Conservation of Momentum,
(HA)z = (HB)z
m rA vA = m rB 𝑣𝐵′
150 × 60 × 19.44 = 150 × 57 × vB cos θ

θ = 20.9° Ans.

15.101 At the instant r = 1.5 m, the 5-kg disk is given a speed of v = 5 m/s,
perpendicular to the elastic cord. Determine the speed of the disk and
the rate of shortening of the elastic cord at the instant r = 1.2 m. The
disk slides on the smooth horizontal plane. Neglect its size. The cord
has an unstretched length of 0.5 m.

15.105 The ball B has a mass of 10 kg and is attached to the end of a
rod whose mass can be neglected. If the shaft is subjected to a
torque M = (3t2 + 5t + 2) N . m, where t is in seconds, determine
the speed of the ball when t = 2 s. The ball has a speed v = 2 m/s
when t = 0.

SOLUTION

Principle of Angular Impulse and Momentum: Applying Eq. 15–22, we have

𝑡2
(Hz)1 + 𝑡1
𝑀𝑧 𝑑𝑡 = (Hz)2

2𝑠
10 (2) (1.5) + 0
3𝑡 2 + 5𝑡 + 2 𝑑𝑡 = 10 (1.5) (v)

v1 = 2.67 m/s Ans.

EXTRA PROBLEM
15.95 Determine the angular momentum HO of each of the particles
about point O.

SOLUTION

HO = m r v

(HA)O = 6 (8) (4 sin 60°) – 6 (12) (4 cos 60°) = 22.3 kg. m2/s Ans.
(HB)O = 4 (2) (6 sin 30°) – 4 (1.5) (6 cos 30°) = – 7.18 kg. m2/s Ans.
12 5
(HC)O = – 2 (2) [2.6 × (13)] – 2 (6) [2.6 × (13)] = – 21.6 kg. m2/s Ans.
