Introduction
In this section I list several opportunities for design improvements or potential to create entirely new designs.
These ideas stem from my everyday experiences, where I recognize possibilities to make a design by refining
existing ones or creating entirely new designs from scratch.

CLASSROOM [SCHOOL]
 Moving desks around the classroom is quite difficult due to its stiffness and grip to the floor. A moving-
mechanism might help.
 Constantly reaching out my backpack for supplies I require, is annoying. It would be great, if there was a
product which would hold everything, I need on my desk itself, without interrupting my productivity.
 Holding chalks always gets our hands powdery and dirty. It would be great to have a product which can be
put on the chalk as a cover, which wouldn’t get our hands dirty.
LIVING ROOM [HOME]
 Lack of a proper storage space for the television remote is quite annoying as the remote gets misplaced
quite easily.
 Not having a designated storage space for home keys with labels, as to which lock it unlocks, is frustrating
as placing them randomly looks shabby and unorganized.

BEDROOM [HOME]
 Cluttered and scattered papers and documents can look shabby if left unorganized. It would be beneficial
to have a proper storage for them, which could even distinguish/differentiate them as per subject.
 No designated space for storing boxes of different electronic devices such as air pods, speakers, mobile
phones etc, can result in them taking up large spaces inside cabinets, which could have been used to
additional storage.

FINAL IDEA

CLASSROOM [SCHOOL]
I’m going to design a product which would successfully solve the issues faced by students, when they cannot organize their
supplies properly and are frustrated and annoyed when they need to find their necessities every time, they need them.
Product description*

A highly possible outcome as a product: ‘Slot-in’ desk organizer

 A redesigned full-sized, desk organizer which can slotted/placed on the desk itself, covering the entire
table top, plus, be removable when not required. *

Design brief
My sole objective is to address and solve the issue of my school’s desks being not so productive, which in some
cases, may affect the student’s academics. Such a unit’s primary function would be to store scholarly
necessities, like stationary, including pens, pencils, markers, highlighters, erasers and so on. Along with that, it
would also provide designated storage areas for documents and bundles of papers, ones like the Cambridge
IGCSE past-papers, as the lack of this storage solution has personally impacted my own productivity. There is
no one absolute major restriction for the product, as I am personally going to design this product for the desks
at my school, hence, it will be fully customized for those desks only. I solely need to focus on the dimensions
(length, width and height) of those desks itself, and design my product around those dimensions. This will give
me the freedom of 'playing around' with the design as I wouldn't need to design it as a universal standard design,
which would come with complications. However, I will have to keep in mind that the final product should be safe,
with no dangerous features like sharp corners or edges. I would also need to ensure the usage of perfect joints
so that the product won't fall apart later on. The aesthetics of unit would mainly focus on being at the modern,
sleek, minimal design, which would be perfect for schools and students.
User analysis
My final product would target users (students) aged 13 to 17.
During school hours: -
My targeted user group, as students, primarily indulge in scholarly activities like note-taking, drawing
(expressing creativity). Such a product, which I plan to design, should be extremely productive, yet not too
complicated for them to use, as they may get annoyed by its complexity.
Design requirements: -
Teenaged students want to have a full-sized desk organizer that can store all their scholarly supplies like
stationery and documents, with ease. They also require a safe space to store their devices such as
laptops/tablets. Lastly, they desire to express their creativity through doodling, and a designated space made
for it would be a mega plus point.
Design limitations: -
Students are already fairly busy at schools, so the usage of this full-size desk organizer should be effortless.
The 'slot-in' process should be seamless, with no complications.

Problem justification
I, myself chose the design problem because I personally witnessed this issue, and the lack of such a product,
built around the actual needs of students. If we focus on the generic term of simply 'desk organizers' there are
innumerable options on the web, but there are hardly any, when asked for schools and students. There aren't
any companies too, that offer custom-made desk organizers for schools and their desks, so I thought I’d take
on the challenge.
