L-3 Direction Sense Test
Main Directions
News = Make four directions, namely north, East, West, and South.
There are four type of directions, viz. East West North and South. Sun rises in the East. Just opposite of
East is West and South is in the opposite to North.
Abbreviations for these directions are E (East), W (West), N (North) and S (South).
Cardinal Directions
A direction between two main directions is called cardinal direction. Clearly, there are four cardinal
directions. They are:
N-E (North-East) N-W (North-West)
S-E (South-East) and S-W (South-West)
We should use the diagram as given in question for the purpose of sensing directions.
Note: Angle formed between two main directions is 90 o and angle formed between a cardinal direction
and main direction is 45 o

Rotation of Angles
To solve angle movement questions. It is necessary to know about the rotations of angles which are
given below
For right direction movement (Clockwise)
B is to the west of A.
B is to the north of A.
B is to the south of A.
B is to the South-west of A.

Pythagoras Theorem
The concept of Pythagoras theorem is highly applicable in direction reasoning problem. In a right-angled
triangle,, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other
oth two sides.
i.e., c2 = a2 + b2.
Shadow Case
In morning/ Sunrise time
If a person facing towards Sun, the shadow will be towards his back or in west.
If a person facing towards South, the shadow will be towards his right.
If a person facing towards West, the shadow will be towards his front.
If a person facing towards North, the shadow will be towards his left.
If a person facing towards Sun, the shadow will be towards his back or in East.
If a person facing towards North, tthe shadow will be towards his right.
If a person facing towards East, the shadow will be towards his front.
If a person facing towards South, the shadow will be towards his left.
Note- At 12:00 noon there is no shadow because the rays of the Sun are vertically downward.
Solved Examples:
Type-1: Final Direction Based
In this type of questions, we have to ascertain the final direction with respected to the initial point or the
directional relations between two points/things.
Question) A man is facing towards West and turns through 45 0 clockwise, again 1800 clockwise and then
turns through 2700 anti-clockwise.
clockwise. In which direction is he facing now?
(A) West (B) North-West
West (C) North (D) South-West
South
Solution: (D)
Finally on moving 2700 anti- clockwise, he faces in the direction OS which is South-West.
South

In this type of question, we deal with the final distance between starting and final point or between two
points/persons/things. There are various formats/patterns of displacement.
Question) Mayank walks 20 m North. Then, he turns right and walks 30 m. Now, he turns right and
walks 35 m. Now, turning left, he walks 15 m. Again, he turns lefts and moves 15 m. In which direction
and how far is he from his original position?
(A) 15 m, East (B) 45 m, East (C) 15 m, West (D) 45 m, West
Solution: (B)
Mayank’s distance from his original position (AF) = BC + DE = 30 + 15 = 45 m. Also ‘F’ lies to East of ‘A’.
In this type of questions, we deal with the final distance between starting and final point of any
person/object/thing. There are various formats/patterns of distance and direction.
Question) A tourist drives 10 Km towards East and turns to the right hand and drives 3 Km. Then, he
drives towards West (turning to his right) 3 Km. He, then turns to his left and drives 2 Km. Finally he turns
to his right and travels 7 Km. How far is he from his starting point and in which direction would he be?
(A) 10 Km, East (B) 9 Km, North (C) 8 Km, West (D) 5 Km, South
Solution: (D)
Required distance AF = BC + DE = 3 + 2 = 5 Km
His final point is F which is in South direction from starting point A.

Type-4: Clock Based
Question) Rahul put his timepiece on the table in such a way that at 6 P.M. hour hand points to the
north. In which direction the minute hand will point at 09:15 P.M.?
Solution: This question becomes very easy once we draw a clock at align the hour hand at 6 P.M. with
the north direction. Now, in the same clock aligned as before, we move the minute and hour hands in
such a way that now it is 09:15 P.M.
As we can see from the image above, minute hand at 09:15 P.M points to the west.
Q3) E $ F @ G # H, then H is in which direction with respect to E and what is distance between H and E?
(A) North, 1m (B) South, 1m (C) South-East, 1m (D) East, 1m
Solution 1)
Example 2) Y is in the east of X which is in the north Z. If P is in the south of Z, then in which direction of
Y, is P?
Solution 2) It is best to solve these type of questions by drawing diagrams. Let us first draw z, and then
from there we can draw other points as well.
Looking at the above picture, it becomes very clear that P is in the south west of Y.
Example 3) A child is looking for his father. He went 90 meters in the East before turning to his right. He
went 20 meters before turning to his right again to look for his father at his uncle’s place 30 meters from
this point. His father was not there. From here he went 100 meters to the North before meeting his father
in a street. What is the smallest distance between the starting point and his father’s position?

Class 9 DIRECTION SENSE TEST 9593751369
For this type of question, Keep in mind that when a person moves to his left side, he will move towards
anti- clockwise direction and when a person moves to his right side, he will move towards clockwise
direction. When a question says moved towards left or right side, we assume that the movement is at an
angle of 90 degrees.
The movement of the child from A to E is as shown in fig.
Clearly, the child meets his father at E.
Now, AF = (AB – FB) = (AB – DC) = (90 – 30) m = 60 m.
EF = (DE – DF) = (DE – BC) = (100 – 20) m = 80 m.
Now the distance is square root of (602 + 802), which will be 100 meters.
Example 4) Kabul is located 2 km away to the north-west Punjab. Rohtak is located 2 km in the south-
west direction from Kabul. Melghat is another place and is located 2 km away in the north-west of
Rohtak. Talu is located 2 km away in the south-west direction from Melghat. In which direction is Talu
from Punjab?
Distances are same i.e. 2km so P, R and T fall in a single line. While K and M are in a single line. Hence,
we can see that Talu is to the West of Punjab.
Example 5) Arya and Bindya start from a point simultaneously. Arya moves to his East and travels 12
km, and Bindya moves to her south and travels 12 km. Arya takes a 270° anti-clock wise turn and travels
12 km. Bindya takes a 90° clock wise turn and runs 18km. Then Bindya goes 30km in same line in
exactly opposite direction. Which of the following is true regarding their positions?
(A) Bindya has travelled 30 km more than Arya
(B) Both are to the south east of original position
(C) Both are at the same point
Solution 5)
In the above figure, we denote Arya’s movement by red line and Bindya’s movement by blue line. We
see that the final destination for both Bindya and Aryan is same and that both are to the south east of
original position. Hence, 2 and 3 are correct.
