Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 3

This lesson will give the learners the idea of estimation by rounding off to the nearest
tens, hundreds, and thousands. The learners would be able to interpret and round numbers to
their nearest tens, hundreds, and thousands using number lines and the literacy and skills that the
learners would be able to learn and use are Critical Thinking, Communication, and Social Skills.

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to

A. Identify the tens, hundreds, and thousands value of a number
B. Interpret the tens, hundreds, and thousand value of a number
C. Value the importance of rounding off numbers

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Rounds numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand.
• Rounds numbers to the nearest tens
• Rounds numbers to the nearest hundreds.
• Rounds numbers to the nearest thousands.
Reference: Math3_q1_mod4_Rounding-Numbers-to-the-Nearest-Tens-Hundreds-
and-Thousands_v2 (M3NS -Ib -15.1)
Materials: number cards, pictures, water bottle full of beads

III. Procedure
a. Preparation
 Greet the students
 The teacher will ask someone to lead the prayer
 Attendance
 Drill

b. Motivation

Ask them if they can guess how many beads are inside the water bottle just by
looking at it.

c. Lesson Proper

Rounding off numbers is one way of making estimates. There is no need

for us to give the exact number. Instead, we just approximate or estimate how
many people or things are there. Estimating or rounding off numbers is important
in visualizing the number of objects or people because it is easy to picture out an
amount or value when expressed in exact tens, hundreds, and thousands.

In this lesson, you will know how to round off numbers to the
nearest tens, hundreds, and thousands.

For example: If you leave your house going to Victorias Elementary

School where you got to school and it takes 14 minutes to get there. Would you
say it takes 10 minutes or 20 minutes to get there? Let’s use this number line.
Find the point of 14. Is it closer to 10 or 20? Since it’s closer to a smaller number,
we round it down. So, 14 rounded to the nearest tens is 10.

What if it was 17 minutes? Is 17 closer to 10 or 20? Since its closest to 20, we

round it up to 20.

Let us go back to our first example. Using the number

line, when we round off 14 to the nearest tens, the answer is 10
since 14 is nearest to 10 than 20.
Applying the rules in rounding off:
Step 1: The digit to be rounded off is 1 since it is in the tens place.
Step 2: The digit to its right is 4.
Step 3: 4 is below 5. So, we will retain 1.
Step 4: Change all the digits to the right of 1 to 0.
Answer: 10

d. Activity

Now, let’s try hundreds. If Citymall is positioned in 260 and your house is in 200,
is 260 nearer to 200 or 300?
Write your answers in your paper.

How about if Citymall is positioned in 240?

Now let’s try this. Round off the following numbers to the indicated place value.
1.) 857 (tens) = 850 or 860? _______
2.) 736 (hundreds) = 700 or 800? _______
3.) 5 548 (thousands) = 5 000 or 6 000? _______

Is rounding off to the nearest thousands hard? Let’s try to answer the item number
3 in your activity.

Round off 5 548 to the nearest thousands.

Step 1: 5 548 The digit to be rounded off is 5 as underlined
Step 2: 5 548 The digit to its right is also 5.
Step 3: 6 _ _ _ Since it is 5. So, 5 + 1 = 6.
Step 4: 6 0 0 0 Change all the digits to its right to 0.
Answer: 6 000
e. Generalization

When rounding off numbers:

First, know the place value of the digit to be rounded off. Second, check the digit
to its right. Then third, if the digit to its right is below 5, retain the digit to be
rounded off. If it is 5 or above, add 1 to the digit to be rounded off. Lastly, change
all the digits to the right of the digit to be rounded off to 0.

f. Evaluation

Group Work: find a pair and answer this problem.

Uncle Ben spent his vacation camping at the famous falls located in Gawahon
Eco Park in Victorias City for 155 days. Rounded to the nearest tens, about how
many days did Uncle Ben spent his vacation at Gawahon Eco Park in Victorias
City?

Follow the rules in rounding off numbers.

Step 1: The digit to be rounded off is __________.
Step 2: The digit to its right is __________.
Step 3: Is the digit in step 2; below, equal or above 5? _________
Add 1 or retain? __________
Step 4: Answer: _________

Answer: Uncle Ben spent _________ days of his vacation at Gawahon Eco Park
in Victorias City.

IV. Assignment

Round the following numbers to the nearest: tens, hundreds, and thousands.
Given Tens Hundreds Thousands
1.) 7 815
2.) 5 274
3.) 1 632
