It has lots of parts that all have important jobs.

Some of these parts are called ‘organs’.

What Are Organs?

Most organs are inside the body.

Organs can help a person to do


lots of things, such as breathe, lungs heart
eat, sleep and move.

The brain sends special messages to


all the different parts of the body.
This tells the body parts what to do.

When a person breathes in, air goes into

Blood travels into the heart. Then, the


heart squeezes tightly to pump the
blood around the body.

Every time the heart pumps, it makes


a quiet thudding noise.

This is called a ‘heartbeat’.

Stomach

Job: breaking down food

When most people swallow food, it travels


down a tube in their throat into the stomach.

The stomach squeezes the food and mixes


it with a special liquid called ‘stomach acid’.
This turns the food into paste.

Your stomach doesn’t only rumble when


you’re hungry! It also makes noises when
it’s squeezing and moving food.
Intestines

Job: taking out the parts of food


that the body needs

Once the food has been mushed up,


it moves along a set of long tubes.

These are called the ‘intestines’.

The intestines take nutrients out of intestine

Any parts of the food that the body doesn’t need are
turned into wee and poo after they leave the intestines.
Liver
Where? inside the belly

Job: cleaning the blood, making


and storing energy

The liver gets rid of the bits in the


blood that the body doesn’t need.

It also uses food to make ‘glucose’.


Glucose gives a person energy.

The liver is one of the biggest
organs in the body.
Kidneys
Where? inside the lower back

Job: cleaning the blood, making wee

All the blood in the body goes


through the kidneys.

The kidneys get rid of the bits in the


blood that the body doesn’t need.

It then turns this into wee and sends


the clean blood back into the body.

two kidneys.
Skin
Where? all over the outside of the body

Job: protecting everything inside the


body, touching and feeling

Skin is stretchy and covers the whole body.

It stops germs from getting in.

When something touches the skin, the


brain works out what it feels like.

A fully grown person usually has 206 bones.

Bones come in different shapes and sizes. Ribs protect


the heart
and lungs.
They fit together like a puzzle to
make a ‘skeleton’ and protect
some of the soft parts inside.
