Hi Anne,
How are you?
Sorry I haven’t written you sooner. Since I got here, I’ve been really busy with my
studying and making new friends. I’m speaking German all the time and going out in the
evenings with my classmates. We’re a real mix of nationalities: Swedish, Italian,
Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilian... We all talk in German, but I’m learning loads about
other languages and countries, too. My host family is really nice. My “parents”, Anna and
Hans, are very communicative and friendly. We live pretty near the school, so I bike
every day. It’s only a short bus ride from Hamburg city centre, and there are loads of
shops and cafés there. There’s an ancient palace too (Ahrensburg Palace) and we’re
going there on a school trip next week. Hamburg is a really interesting place to be and
there’s a festival going on at the moment. It’s awesome, but a bit expensive for us
students, so we’ve been hanging out in the street watching the free street performances.
Yesterday, I saw a magician doing magic tricks – it was so much fun! I’ll send you some

photos of the Palace next time. Take care and let me know how you are doing.

In today’s increasingly interconnected world, proficiency in other languages is a vital skill that gives
you the opportunity to compete and be successful in the global economy.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the human experience is our ability to connect with others.
Being able to communicate with someone in their language is an incredible gift since, as bilinguals,
5 you have the unique opportunity to communicate with a larger variety of people.
Language skills can be a significant competitive advantage that distinguishes you from your job
opponents. They are at the top skills required. Employers are seeking professionals who can
communicate with customers in new markets as well as serve in our country.
There are many cognitive benefits of learning languages. People who speak more than one
10 language improve their memory, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, and develop their
concentration and ability to multitask.
Language is the most direct connection to other cultures. Being able to communicate in another
language creates an appreciation for the traditions, religions, art, and history of the people
associated with that language. Greater understanding, in turn, promotes greater tolerance, empathy,
15 and acceptance of others.
Travellers who know more than one language connect and interact with the place and its people
more easily. Learning a second language also opens additional doors to opportunities for studying or
working abroad.
In a world of more than 6,000 spoken languages, we sometimes require translation, but speaking at

20 least one additional language empowers us to access information that would otherwise be impossible to
get.
As we explore a new language and culture, we naturally compare it to what is most familiar to us, so
learning about another culture helps us learn about our own culture. You may find a greater
