Aircraft Engine Types and its parts.

 Basic Reciprocating Piston Engine parts.

 Crankshaft: the crankshaft and the connecting rod change the straight line
motion of the piston to a rotary turning motion. The crankshaft in an aircraft
aksi absorbs the power or work from all cylinders and transfers it to the
propeller.

 Connecting rods: this component makes a link betwwen crankshaft and

the piston
 Pistons: Moving within the cylinder, forms ones of the walls of the
combustion chamber. The pistons has rings which seal the gases in the
cylinder, preventing any loss of power around the sides of the piston.

 Cylinder: The cylinder forms a part of the chamber in which fuel/air

mixture is compressed and burned.
 Valves:
Intake valve: this valve is needed to let the fuel/air into the cylinder.
Exhaust valve: is needed to let the gases go out.

 Basic Gas Turbine Engine parts.

 Air Entrance: designed to conduct incoming air to the compressor with a
minimun energy loss resulting from drag or ram pressure loss.

 Compressor section: its primary functions is to supply air in sufficient

quantity to satisfy the requirements of the combustion burners. It also must
increase the pressure of the mass of air received from inlet duct.
 Combustion section: it houses the combustion process which raises the
temperature of the air passing trough the engine. This process releases
energy contained in the air/fuel mixture the major part of this energy is used
to drive the compressor.

 Turbine section: it transforms a portion of the kinetic energy (velocity)

energy of the exhaust gases into mechanical energy to drive the gas
generator compressor and accesories.
 Basic Turboshaft Engine parts.

The turbopropeller (turboprop) engine is a combination of a gas turbine

engine, reduction gear box, and a propeller. Turboprops are basically gas
turbine engines that have a compressor, combustion chamber(s), turbine, and
an exhaust nozzle (gas generator), all of which operate in the same manner
as any other gas engine.
