Lab 1 SS21503

The document discusses an introduction to using the ERDAS IMAGINE software for environmental remote sensing. It includes details about a Landsat dataset, such as the number of rows and columns, total area, projection and bands. It also discusses displaying different band combinations and identifying features like water, vegetation and land.

INTRODUCTION TO ERDAS IMAGINE
ERDAS IMAGINE is a powerful software package that is probably the most commonly
used (although there are many other good packages) by remote sensing scientists for
manipulating and analyzing data. In this exercise, you will familiarize yourselves with its
capabilities. A good way to get started with any complex software is to explore the various
menus and buttons to see what kinds of tasks the software can do.

QUESTION
1) How do you want to get the information regarding the image being displayed?

By clicking the metadata, it will appear the information regarding the image being
displayed.

2) How many rows and columns in the dataset?

Row: 1016
Column: 1141

3) What is the total area of the dataset?

Total area = (1016 x 30) (1141 x 31) = 1043330400 m²

4) What is the Projection, Spheroid, and datum of the dataset? Do you think this
information is important? Why?

Projection: RSO
Spheroid: Modified Everest
Datum: Kertau 1948

I think this information is important to know the format use in achieving this raster
image also to ensure the projection used is according to the specification required.

5) What type of resolutions being displayed in the layer information?

Spatial resolution : 30m x 30m

Spectral resolution : 7 bands
Radiometric resolution : 8 bits (0 - 255)

6) How many bands are there in the dataset? Describe each band.

Band 1 : Blue 0.45 – 0.52 𝜇m

Band 2 : Green 0.52 – 0.60 𝜇m
Band 3 : Red 0.63 – 0.69 𝜇m
Band 4 : Near infrared (NIR) 0.76 – 0.90 𝜇m
Band 5 : Mid IR 1.55 – 1.75 𝜇m
Band 6 : Thermal IR 10.4 – 12.5 𝜇m
Band 7 : Mid IR 2.08 – 2.35 𝜇m

7) Write down the lowest and highest digital numbers for each band.

Band 1 : 59 - 229
Band 2 : 23 - 136
Band 3 : 21 - 218
Band 4 : 7 - 149
Band 5 : 1 - 255
Band 6 : 101 - 164
Band 7 : 0 - 239

8) Try displaying different band combinations (eg: 321, 123, 543, 453, 432, 741) and
answer the following questions.
a) If you want to study water features, which band combinations would you
prefer?
Band combinations for water features is 742.
b) If you want to study vegetation features, which combination would you
prefer?
Band combinations for vegetation features is 751.

c) If you want to study land features, which combination would you prefer?
Band combinations for land features is 452.
d) If you want to study linear features, which combination would you prefer?
Band combinations for linear features is 321.

e) After applying and trying several band combinations, which combination

would you prefer when displaying Landsat TM imagery? Justify.
Band combinations for displaying Landsat TM imagery is 752.
When presenting Landsat TM imagery, band combination 752 is the most
ideal. This is because the band colour combination allows for the efficient
viewing of each individual component, making it possible to clearly highlight
each feature: water, plant, land, and linear. Because of its range of
wavelengths, the band combination 752, can display distinct aspects from one
another.
