Instructions Related to Use Variables:
Note that this problem uses the variables a, b, c, d, and e, which are the digits of middle of your
student ID (13-abcde-1).

1. Assume a lighting system consisting of a 100 W power supply and two lamps as shown in figure 1. [10]
You must select the two lamps from the following three available lamps.
𝑅1 =(10× 𝑐) Ω; cost = 80 Tk
𝑅2 =(10× 𝑑) Ω; cost = 85 Tk
𝑅3 =(10× 𝑒) Ω; cost = 90 Tk
The system should be designed for minimum cost such that lies within the range I = 2.65 A ±
(10× 𝑏)%. Apply your knowledge and select which combination of lamps meets the above
requirements.

2. A portion of a residential service to a home is depicted in the figure 2 where, Load 1: (d) number of 100
mW bulbs in parallel; Load 2: Washing Machine, (100 × e) mW; Load 3: TV, (100 × c) mW.
(i) Determine the current through each load of the network. [2]
(ii) What is the total resistance of the network? [2]
(iii) Determine the power supplied by the 220 V source. How does it compare to the total power [2]
of the load?
(iv) If you want to use a circuit breaker with the source, which value would you choose from the [2]
following so that it does not trip? 0 to 5 mA/5 to 10 mA/10 to 20 mA/20 to infinite mA.
(v) Calculate the total energy dissipated through each load if the switch is turned on for (d+2) [2]
hours.

3. (i) Determine the resistance at 40˚C of a 100 ft of telephone wire if the diameter is 0.0126 inch. [2]
Choose the material as Aluminum if (d+e) is an even number and Copper if (d+e) is an odd
number. Use table 1 for Resistivity (𝜌).
(ii) What is the value of the resistance of part (i) if the area is reduced by a factor three (3) and [2]
the length is doubled while the temperature remains constant?
(iii) What is the value of the resistance of part (ii) if the temperature is increased to 100˚C? Use [3]
table 2 for Infrared Absolute Temperature (|𝑇𝑖 |).
(iv) Explain briefly the reason for the change in part (iii). [3]
