Topic 3: Classifying Text Types


The following texts are excerpts taken from the internet. Classify the given texts as Narrative
(tells a story), Expository (explains and informs), Descriptive (describes and paints a picture through
words), Persuasive (convinces reader).
_________________1. Early one morning, Jean decided to go for a walk in the Social Center. As she
strolled, the sun began to rise, casting a golden glow over the trees. Later that
day, she met her friends and invited her for lunch.
_________________2. The sunset filled the entire sky with deep color of rubies, setting the clouds
ablaze. The waves crashed and danced along the shore, mowing up and down in
a graceful and gentle rhythm like they were dancing.
_________________3. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. This disease can
be fatal if it leads to heart attack or cardiac arrest. Heart attack occurs when a
blockage in the coronary artery prevents oxygenated blood from reaching the
heart. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops pumping entirely which
prevents the patient from breathing normally.
_________________4. At first, the man was very nice to the bird. But then, he got very angry. “You
stupid bird!”, pointed the man to the parrot. “ Why can’t you say the word?”
_________________5. Though cellphones are necessary for high school students in terms of their
safety, they should still be prohibited from use in school.
_________________6. School uniforms are good for the development of children. First of all, everyone
is dressed unified so, no one has “better clothes” than others and no one can
threaten others just because of their clothes. School uniforms also keep
everyone from having to buy expensive clothes.
_________________7. “It is my belief, and I’m sure it is also yours, that the struggle for democracy and
freedom is a critical struggle, for their preservation is essential to the great
objective of the United Nations to maintain peace and security… It must help us
to pass it on to generations to come.”
_________________8. “It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair
over four long tables where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables
were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets.
_________________9. Let us plant more trees and help Mother Earth recover from destruction
deterioration. We have to act now for the future generation.
_________________10. Travel has become every Filipino dream. In the same way that an American
dreams of becoming a millionaire or an English boy dreams of going to one of
the great universities, the Filipino dreams of going abroad.
