INTRODUCTION
Assalamualaikum WBT. My name is Mohammad Zikry Naqiuddin bin Zuwairi and I am from
Butterworth, Penang. My previous school was Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah, Putrajaya and
now I have finished my foundation study in IIUM in BENL course. Back then in school, I
represented my school in cricket, fire briged and played gamelan as well. I achieved many
achievements back then. In IIUM, I actively involve myself with any programmes that have
been held and also have a chance to be the Emcee for a programme previously. I involve
myself in many activities because I want to challenge myself to be brave speaking in front of
many people and overcome my nervousness while I have the floor to speak. I want to be an
English teacher and that is why I want to get into the TESL programme. I am sure that I can
be a teacher because back then, I was usually appointed as mentor and teach my friends. I
enjoy teaching my friends because when I see my friends' achievements or when they get
great marks, I will be very happy for them and proud with what they achieve. It is a great
feeling when we can help people that need our help and when they achieve it, it is totally
happiness that I can feel. Now, since I am not doing anything in my house, every night I will
make a class for my younger siblings and teach them. Every tuesday and thursday, I will
teach them and my cousin via google meet English subject. It is fun having them and it
actually fills my time and I also have a chance to improve my English too.
WHAT IS TESL?
TESL is Teaching English Second Language, where we will be teaching English in
secondary school. Teaching Language will acquire many tools to teach such as
communication and presentation. In TESL, as far as I know we will learn 4 main things which
are reading, writing, grammar and LnS (listening and speaking) and add on literature and
drama as non-core subjects. And if I am not mistaken we will learn academically as we need
to be trained on how to teach students in the right way. As part of the TESL course, you will
pick up the right skills and knowledge to deliver English lessons to students competently.
Some of the subjects that you will study in a TESL Degree include:
Some universities may require you to undergo a teaching practicum or internship at schools
as part of the programme. You’ll learn first-hand the day-to-day work of a TESL teacher,
giving you practical work experience. This will enhance your knowledge and allow you to
apply what you have learnt to your future job.
