Very good children.

Check the work of group 2. -

In this activity you studied the animals and

identified them through their physical
characteristics that are directly observable by
the naked eye. Those physical characteristics
are commonly observed in vertebrate animals.

Check the work of group 3.

Now let us know what are the classifications of

vertebrates and their characteristics.

F. EXPLAIN

VERTEBRATES are animals with backbone

and is classified into five (5) groups namely:
amphibian, bird, fish, mammal, and reptile.

MAMMALS are warm-blooded, have hair,

produce milk for their young, they have hair or
fur and breathe with their lungs.
**Last week our lesson was about how
animals give birth. You have learned that
mammals are born alive and they cannot live
without the care of their mothers.

All of these kind/groups are found around us.

At home, what animals have fur? -Dogs, cats, etc.…
How do they feed their young/babies? Like the -They suck milk from their mothers.
cat?
Good job!
What mammals that lives in the water? -Whales, seals, walruses and dolphins.
**Have you watch National geographic
channel? They showed how whales give birth.

In the air? What kind of mammal lives in the -Bats!

air?
Do you know that bats are the only flying
mammals in the world? Yes, they are the only
flying mammals that we have.
Where do you see them? -Caves and trees!
What characteristics do they have? -They have wings and fur!
Very good!

AMPHIBIANS are cold-blooded, they live in

the water when they are still young because
they have gills. But its gills will develop into
lungs when they become adults. They can live
both in the water and on land. They also have
smooth and moist skin.
Where do we see frogs? -We can see them at ponds and rivers.
Examples are salamanders, geckos, frogs,
toads and newts. They belong to what group -Amphibians!
of vertebrae?
Good!

Next are called reptiles. What are examples of -Snakes, lizards, tortoise and alligators.
these animals?
Does the snake have bones? -Yes.
Are caterpillars the same with the snake? -No.
What reptiles are seen in our ceiling? -Lizards!
Who has seen a turtle?
They belong to what group of vertebrates? -Reptiles!
What characteristics differ them from -Reptiles are cold-blooded, breathe with lungs,
mammals? lay eggs and have dry scaly skins.
Both amphibians and reptiles are also cold-
blooded and lay eggs to reproduce.

What vertebrate have wings and can fly? -Birds!

**A week ago, you have learned how animals
move using their body parts and one of this
are birds. They use their wings to fly.
Do all birds fly? -No!
Not all birds can fly, examples are penguins,
ostriches etc.…
BIRDS are warm-blooded, lay eggs, have
feathers and wings. They have two legs,
breathe with lungs and have bills or beaks
instead of teeth.
Give me examples of birds you know. -Mayas, eagles and many more.

What vertebrate are with gills and lives in the -Fishes!

water?
FISHES are cold-blooded, breathe with gills.
They lay eggs and have fins.
Give examples of fishes. -Tunas, Lapu-Lapu and many more.

G. ELABORATE

Let us now determine and summarize the

distinguishing characteristics of the five
classifications of vertebrates.

What are the FIVE classifications of - Mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and
vertebrates? fishes.

What are their characteristics?

MAMMALS? - are warm-blooded, have hair, produce milk
for their young, give live birth, have hair or fur
and breathe with their lungs

AMPHIBIANS? - are cold-blooded, breathe with lungs and

gills, smooth, moist skin (no scales) and lay
eggs. They can both live on land and in the
water.

REPTILES? - are cold-blooded, breathe with lungs, lay eggs

and have dry scaly skins

BIRDS? - are warm-blooded, lay eggs, have feathers

and wings. They have two legs, breathe with
lungs and have bills or beaks instead of teeth

FISHES? - are cold-blooded, breathe with gills. They lay

eggs and have fins. They live in the water.
Very good children.

**What animals do you have at home? -Dogs, cats, fishes etc.…

Do all families have dogs at home? How about -No.
the Badjaos? Do they have dogs at home?
They live near the water.
What kind of animals are common in their -Fishes!
environment?
So, remember not all animals are taken care
domestically by people.
How do you care and protect the animals at - Feed them regularly. Give them shelter and
home? water. Give them care. Love your animals.

Very good children!
