“Biag ni Lam-ang” Reflection

The epic tale "Biag ni Lam-ang" was originally written in Ilocano. It tells of the incredible
adventures of Lam-ang, a legendary hero known for his extraordinary bravery and strength. There’s a
lot of inspiring things we can read from this story but there is also cons that I will speak about on this
epic tale. In this essay, we will examine the positive and negative aspects of this well-known epic.
We can develop a more thorough understanding of "Biag ni Lam-ang's" ongoing value in the context
of Philippine literature by critically assessing its strengths and weaknesses.

For now, let’s start with the positive side of this epic tale; The story character “Lam-ang” is a
courage guy. He is also a brave man that will do any challenges that he encounters. Lam-ang's
fearlessness is an example of the value of his courage. In his journey, he encounters several
challenges and enemies, proving that strength and determination are capable of victory over even the
most difficult trials. He can sacrifise himself just for his love ones and that is his loyalty. Despite his
amazing skills and achievements, Lam-ang maintains a respectful and humble personality. His
modesty serves as a reminder that even people who have extraordinary talents must keep a sense of
respectful and modesty.

Let’s start now with my opinion and criticism about this epic tale, the story itself suffer from
being old-styled steretype which we can quickly notice it with other folktales. This story also suffers
for being stereotype in gender roles where women serving men which there’s nothing wrong with it
but at the same time it feels very misogyny but since this happened for a long time ago, I’ll let it
slide. I also seen on how Lam-ang father died on his dreams are just pointless for my opinion, I know
this is a fantasy with a talking new-born infant and his loyal assistant dog and chicken but it’s just a
weak part of the story if you ask me since what happened if Lam-ang misunderstood and his father
are just literally missing and he still killed a several Igorots, that’s messed up but I know what this
story trying to show Lam-ang courageness and justice for his father.

In conclusion, "Biag ni Lam-ang” epic tale presents a captivating blend of strengths and
weaknesses. Lam-ang, the fearless hero, shows his courage, determination, and selflessness in the
face of several challenges, reminding us of the enduring power of these principles. Yet, the story can
be criticized for its adherence to old stereotypes and gender roles, raising questions about its
relevance in modern times. However, this epic continues to be an essential part of Philippine
literature, providing timeless lessons in heroism.
