QUESTION 3: KINEMATICS

3.1. An object is projected at such an angle that the range is five times the maximum height
reached. The initial velocity of the object is 200 m/s.
Calculate the angle of projection. [5]

3.2. A light aircraft with airspeed of 350 km/h takes off at OR Tambo airport in a
direction of South 63° West. The aircraft is blown off course by heavy wind
blowing at 148 km/h from a direction North 59° West.
Calculate the resultant velocity of the aircraft in magnitude and direction. [5]

3.3. Ship A sails at 80 km/h north 58° west, whilst ship B is sailing at 70 km/h south 45° east.
Calculate the velocity of ship A relative to ship B in magnitude and direction. [5]

QUESTION 4: DYNAMICS

A tractor with a weight of 12 Mg is at rest on the top of a hill. The tractors brakes are released
and it moves freely down the hill and reaches the beginning of the horizontal road at a speed
of 50 m/s, after 9 s.
Calculate
4.1. The distance moved the truck after 9 s. [3]
4.2. The angle of inclination of the road from the top of the horizontal road [3]
4.3. The distance travelled by the tractor on the horizontal road before it stops if its stops
5s after reaching the horizontal road [3]

QUESTION 5: HYDRAULICS

5.1. The following refers to a single acting hydraulic press:


Effort on lever = 195 N
Slip of press =6%
Mechanical Advantage of press = 15
Diameter of ram to the dimeter of plunger = :1
Calculate the weight of the load that the car can be exerted by the ram of the hydraulic

5.2. A double-cylinder single-action piston pump with a diameter 0f 50 mm and a stroke


length of 180 mm, is designed to deliver water at a rate of 0,0027 litres per second.
Calculate the operating speed (in r/min), if the efficiency is 84% [4]

5.3. A mass loaded accumulator has a diameter of 320 mm and a mass of 500 kg.
The machine it serves requires a pressure of 2,8 MPa.
Calculate the additional mass required to add a weight to obtain the required hydraulic
pressure. [3]

QUESTION 6: STRESS-STRAIN AND YOUNG’S MODULUS

6.1.A round bar with a diameter of 80 mm and a length of 600 mm is machined to have a
square area of 30 mm sides over the length of 0,4 m.
If the stress in the square section is not to exceed 6500 MPa, calculate the following:

6.1.1. The stress in the round bar [4]


6.1.2. The total extension of the bar if Young's modulus for the
material is 200 GPa [5]
6.2. Six 2, 9 mm pipes, having outside diameters of 40 mm and inside diameters
of 32 mm each are used as the legs of a stand .
The maximum compressive stress in the pipe material must not exceed 95 MPa.
Young’s modulus for the material is 450 GPA.

6.2.1. Calculate the maximum mass that can be placed on the stand. [3]
6.2.2. Determine the amount the pipes will shorten under the maximum load. [3]

QUESTION 7: STATICS

A light uniform beam is 10 m long and has a mass of 150 kg/m. It is horizontal and rests on
two supports, one 2m from the left end and the other one at 1m from the right end. Consider
the following loads that the beam carries and then answer the questions which follow.
A point load of 450 N, 1m from the left end
A concentrated load of 700 N , 4m from the right enht end
A uniformly distributed load of 20 N/m between the 700 N and the support from the right end

7.1. Calculate the reactions at the supports [6]


7.2. Draw a fully labelled shear force diagram. ALL THE MAIN VALUES MUST BE

7.4. Determine the bending moments at 400 N, 700 N and at the supports [5]
