BIBLE STUDY

TOPIC: THE SPIRIT WITHIN AND THE SPIRIT UPON 2


AIM: To help the believer come to the realization of the working of the Spirit for service.
TEXT: MATTHEW 3:11, JOEL 2:28-29, ACTS 2:1-4, CORINTHIANS 3:5-6,
MEMORY VERSE: ACTS 1:8 ‘But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is
come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and
in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.’

INTRODUCTION

Scripture reveals the working of the Holy Spirit in regenerating the spirit of a man or in
the new birth experience, that a man is only born again because the Spirit of Christ dwells in him,
John 3:5-8, Romans 8:8-9, but scripture also reveals that there is another experience of the Spirit
to look forward to and earnestly long after, the first experience is the indwelling of the Spirit of
God within a believer at salvation, leading to transformation from within but the second
experience is the Spirit coming upon the believer to equip him to serve.

TWO SEPARATE EXPERIENCES


There are two experiences of the Spirit revealed in Scriptures, the first being the infilling of the
Spirit at new birth or when a person is born again and the next is upon for service. Luke 24:45-49,
Jesus speaking to the disciples on what their mandate is and instructed them not to go until they be
endued with power when the promise of the Father comes upon them, Acts 1:8 validates the
coming of power to be witnesses but John 20:22-23 records the disciples receiving the Holy Ghost
but there was no mention of the power to witness what was mention was the forgiveness of sins,
which is a working of the Spirit at salvation. Acts 8:14-17, we know that receiving the word of
God is the same as being born again which is the entrance of the Spirit into the believer, 1 Peter
1:23, but the Apostles were called because even though the Samarians had the Spirit within now
that they are born again they needed to be filled with the Spirit.

The Spirit upon, being filled with the Spirit, receiving the Holy Ghost, the baptism of the Spirit,
are all words use to explain the same experience of the Spirit equipping the believer to witness
Christ, Acts 19:1-6,10:44-48, 2:1-4, the most consistent sign all through the new testament that a
man had the Spirit upon is that they speak with tongues.

EQUIPPED TO WORK
Whenever God has an assignment at heart or a need to be fulfilled, He gets the job done by finding
men, and enables them to carry out the assignment by pouring out His Spirit upon them, the Spirit
upon is God’s enabling ability to carry out the assignment of God, Luke 1:34-35, Joshua 3:8-10,
Judges 14:5-6, 1 Samuel 16:13, Acts 4:31-33, the works of God are carried out by men that are
filled with the Spirit, the Spirit upon comes to equip the man to express God’s possibilities.

CONCLUSION: Just as the Spirit within works out the fruits of the Spirit through a believer, the
Spirit upon also causes the believer to expresses the gifts of the Spirit so as to effectively witness
Christ, the Spirit upon is power to witness Christ.
