CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

Effective communication between BAEL first year students and teachers is pivotal for

fostering academic success and a supportive learning environment. This inquiry delves into

the communication strategies utilized to enhance student teacher interaction, recognizing the

challenges faced by BAEL first-year students in transitioning to higher education. Evaluating

these strategies requires comprehensive assessment frameworks to capture certain aspects

that can possibly assist the students to interact. There are some different ways to assist

learners to overcome these difficulties, one of which is to apply a learning method that is

proper to solve the problems that learners generally come across in translation classes

(Mannahal and Rijal, 2020). Similar to this, cooperative groups usually involve cooperative

activities and conversations that foster positive peer-to-peer communication and improve

teacher-student relationships (Xie and Derakhshan, 2021). These exchanges are thought to be

a successful way to increase student interest (Derakhshan, 2021). A Bachelor of Arts in

English Language student’s transition to higher education comes with unique difficulties,

especially when it comes to speaking with teachers in an efficient manner. Among these

difficulties is deciphering professors’ in-depth criticism, which could use technical jargon or

academic terms that are new to students. Furthermore, it can be challenging to navigate

cultural differences in expectations and communication patterns, particularly for those who

are from various parts of the nation. To overcome these obstacles, students must be proactive

in communicating with their teachers, ask questions when necessary, and make use of the

tools that are readily available, including writing centers and tutoring programs, to ensure

successful adjustment to their academic environment.

One way to promote student responsibility for learning is to have them actively

participate in social interactions in the classroom by having them take on roles as readers,

writers, presenters, listeners, and thinkers (Alvermann and Phelps, 2005; Vacca and Mraz,

2011). Teachers influence a sense of ownership and autonomy in their students’ learning

processes by establishing an environment in which students actively participate in these

responsibilities. This method promotes critical thinking and cooperative learning

opportunities in addition to improving students’ comprehension and communication abilities.

In order to improve their engagement and develop critical thinking abilities, students use

active learning practices (Baepler et al., 2014). These assignments help students become more

efficient learners by encouraging them to take ownership of their education and participate

actively in class discussions. Munir et al. (2018) also stress the significance of creating

activities that encourage teacher-student interaction and develop learners critical thinking and

creativity. Successful communication has a direct impact on students’ academic achievement

and success in the classroom. It is essential for creating a supportive learning environment.

As English language bachelor’s degree holders move into higher education, good

communication skills with the instructors become critical. Effective communication makes it

easier for students to understand and adjust their work to meet goals by making it easier for

them to interpret precise feedback. Additionally, students can establish a relationship with

their teachers and feel more encouraged in their academic path by overcoming cultural

variations in communication techniques. Active participation is encouraged in this

encouraging setting, which improves learning outcomes and boosts academic achievement.

As a result, placing a high priority on good communication not only creates a supportive

learning environment but also has a substantial positive impact on students’ general success

and academic achievement in higher education.

The current study closely measures the communication tactics that are effective in

improving the relationship between teachers and students, allowing for a clear and

understandable identification of the strategies that work and those that don’t. Due to the gap

between the teacher and students, that resulted to many different communication strategies in

there interactions. It is necessary to measure the effective communication strategies in

enhancing the interaction of the teacher and student. Therefore, the study focuses on the

BAEL first year college students as participants who are currently adopting to their new

environment of learning. By understanding the impact of multiple communication methods

on fostering productive interactions, institutions can refine their approaches to facilitate a

supportive learning environment conducive to student success. Additionally, insights gained

from this study can inform the development of tailored communication training programs for

educators ultimately enhancing the overall educational experience and fostering stronger

student-teacher relationship.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to identify the effective and less effective communication strategies

between teachers and BAEL students at Eastern Visayas State University Main Campus in the

academic year 2023–2024.

It specifically aims to provide answers to the following questions:

1. What effects do classroom environments have on teachers and students’ ability to

communicate effectively?

2. To what degree do cultural differences affect how well students and teachers

communicate?
3. What impact does the accessibility of technology have on the strategies of

communication that teacher and students use?

Significance of the Study

Students- this study will enhance the students learning experience, understanding, and

academic performance, which will result from students becoming active and attentive

learners.

Instructors- this study will help the instructors engage with students more effectively,

Parents- this study aims to show the parents how more effective student-teacher interaction

can result in a better educational development that will promote more honest and efficient

communication between educators and parents, improving the support for the student.
Future Researchers- this study can give benefits to future researchers on the communication

of student-teacher interaction that will benefit present and future students as well as educators

by serving as a foundation for additional research on educational practices and strategies.

academic year 2023-2024. The respondents in this study are BAEL first year students of the

current academic year.

Definition of Terms

All terms used in this study were all defined operationally.

Effective Communication- The good quality of interaction between teachers and students.

There is a two way process of communication in which teacher respectfully listens to

students’ opinion and give clear instructions and explanations, and encourages open dialogue.

teacher who gives guidance, support, and feedback throughout the activities of the students.

Students participate in discussions, ask guidance from the teacher, and share their progress

and challenges that they encounter. This interaction gives a supportive learning experience.

Supportive Learning Environment- The safe place of a student to learn and study.

Activities that happens in a classroom with good arrangements, enough resources of books,
and a positive classroom environment in which acceptance arises. Having this good

environment to study let students to feel comfortable expressing their ideas and opinions.

This gives a supportive learning environment that improves teacher-student interaction.

Academic Success- Achievement of a student. The teacher check the progress of evey
