VALUES
By Khalil Gibran

Once a man unearthed in his field a marble

statue of great beauty. And he took it to a
collector who loved all beautiful things and
offered it to him for sale, and the collector
bought it for a large price. And they parted.
And as the man walked home with his
money he thought, and he said to himself,
“How much life this money means! How can
anyone give all this for a dead carved stone
buried and undreamed of in the earth for a
thousand years?”
And now the collector was looking at his
statue, and he was thinking, and he said to
himself, “What beauty! What life! The dream of
what a soul!—and fresh with the sweet sleep
of a thousand years. How can anyone give all
this for money, dead and dreamless?”

In this portion, after reading the text, the teacher will

pick students to answer the following questions:

1) What is the title of the text that you had read?

a. How did you identify its title?

2) What is the main idea of the text?

a. How did you come up with your answers?

3) Based on the answers of your classmates, do you

have an idea on what will be our discussion for
today?

After the class shared their ideas and answers, the

teacher will proceed on discussing the main points of the
lesson.

Reading Strategies – are processes that helps a

reader decode and understand a written text. There are
various kinds of reading strategies. Two of those is
scanning and skimming.

Let’s discuss the two reading strategies with in-depth

understanding!

Scanning – is a technique used to find specific

information. It is an approach that has a goal of locating
a particular fact. In scanning, you do not need to read
the whole text. Hence, this reading strategy is
convenient to students who is finding a certain piece of
information as it is not time consuming.

To guide you in scanning, here are some practical

steps to scan efficiently:

1. Decide for what kind of information you’re

searching.

2. Look only for the needed information.

3. Let your eyes scan the whole text, without

missing any detail.

4. When you think you found the answer you

needed, stop scanning, and read that specific
part again to confirm that you have the correct
answer.

Skimming – is a technique that requires you read swiftly

through a text. It is used to find the main idea or the
central theme of the text. Also, it can determine if a text
is worth reading according to the reader’s needs.

To guide you in skimming, here are some practical

steps to skim efficiently:

1. Read rapidly through the text. Note titles,

headings, and subheadings.

2. Do not try to remember everything; try to

understand the text you’re reading.

3. Be sure to understand the purpose of the text:

focus on its main idea.

4. After finding the main idea of the text, read it

carefully with sheer understanding.

Below are scenarios that utilizes skimming:
