Understanding Salvation

The document discusses the concept of salvation in Christianity, explaining that it involves justification, sanctification, and glorification. Justification saves believers from the guilt and penalty of past sins. Sanctification is the ongoing process of being transformed to be more like Jesus and delivered from the power of sin. UNDERSTANDING SALVATION
(Justification, Sanctification and Glorification)
Story,
One Sunday afternoon, a young man walked to church looking tired and sleepy. He didn’t sit
down as the rest of the people, instead he walked straight to the front, and knelt to the
pulpit. His eyes were in tears, and with His hands lifted up, he cried out loud
“Have mercy on me oh God and save me from guilt, save me from this pain inside” the
church was quiet and everyone was shocked.
He had been famous for drinking smoking and spoiling young girls. His mother had been
praying for Him all his life, and siblings had been sharing the gospel with him.
The pastor led him to prayer, and that afternoon, marked the beginning of a whole new era
in his life. God saved him from His sins.

What is salvation or “being saved”.

 It means redemption (being purchased and rescued), from the power and penalty of
sin: It is a free gift from God through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-10.
 It entails being raised from Spiritual death to new life in Jesus. Ephesians 2:1-6.
 Thus becoming new creation. 2nd Corinthians 5:17…Old life is gone, new life has
began.

SIN: Sin is Rebellion against God. It is missing to meet the standards of righteousness that
God has set for us. It is desire to control our lives.
 Genesis 1:26-2:7.. Creation of man; in God’s image and likeness; man was without sin.
 Genesis 3.. Adam and Eve deceived by serpent; Man sinned; Origin of sin began with
satan; Through Satan man sinned. 1st John 3:8.
 Through Adam and Eve we are all sinners. Romans 5:12... When Adam sinned sin
entered the world…
 We are all sinners. (Ecclesiastes 7:20, Romans 3:23, Psalms 53:2-3)
Psalms 51:5.. Surely I was sinful since birth from the time my mother conceived me.

Consequences of sin
Sin leads to death in 3 ways:
1. Spiritual death (Separation from intimacy with God)
Adam and Eve after sin were banished from Eden. (Genesis 3:23)
Isaiah 59:2.. Your sins have separated you from God. His face has been turned away and will
not listen from you.
2. Physical death. (Separation of soul from body)
John 10:10. The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy.
Sin destroys innocence, ideals, will-power resulting to slavery, leading to more sin than
death.
3. Eternal death. (Eternal separation from the presence of God to hell)
Eternal condemnation
Warning to Adam and Eve in Genesis 2:17… if you eat of it you will die.
Paul says, the wages of sin is death.
1st Corinthians 15:22… For as in Adam all die so in Christ all will be made alive.
Revelation 20:11-15… Final Judgement, the book of life and death, the lake of fire in the
second death.

What saves us from this death?

Grace.
Aspects of salvation:
Salvation is in 3 phases:
1. Justification.
2. Sanctification
3. Glorification.

1. Justification - We are saved.

Salvation in the past tense. (We are saved from the guilt and penalty of our past sins)
Salvation begins when we believe, accept Jesus ( as God’s sufficient remedy for our sins )
and confessing our sins, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10,
“Judicial” act called Justification.
God is the judge and declares the guilty sinners innocent. Romans 3:21-26… we are made
right with God by placing our faith in Jesus… God is being fare by withdrawing the
punishment of sins. Romans 5:1… we’ve been right in God’s sight…

2. Sanctification: We are being saved.

Salvation in the present tense. Being saved from the corruption of sin.
Lord’s prayer says do not lead us into temptation.
Continuous process of being transformed to become more like Jesus. 2nd Corinthians 7:1.
Philippians 2:12-13 ..(work hard to show the result of your salvation, by obeying God with
deep reverence and fear.. God is working in you.
This stage delivers us from the present power of sin of the
World (1st John 5:4)
Flesh – Romans 7:24-25
Devil – James 4:7.. Lord’s prayer Deliver me from the evil one.
We are made more and more like him. 2nd Corinthians 3:18.
Converted to the same way we were in His image in Genesis.
We can never be perfect, but WE STRIVE TO LIVE A MATURE SINLESS LIFE. Colossians 1:28-29
How do you grow in Holiness?
I. Word of God. John 17 :6-7… the ones you gave me have kept your word.
II. Prayer. 1st Thessalonians 5:17… never stop praying.
III. Cooperation with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:3-4… we follow
the Spirit not our sinful nature.

3. Glorification : we shall be saved.

Salvation from the future presence of sin
It is the final salvation of our sins and conclusion of redemption from the world of sin
to eternal glory
Romans 8:18-30... the unseen hope…longing for glorification..
Second coming of Jesus.
Glorification removes us from the presence of future sins forever (Romans 8:30)
In our eternal home in heaven we no longer have a sinful nature, we will be ‘perfect’
in our glorious bodies (Philippians 3:20-21) We will no longer be able to sin
2nd Corinthians 5:1-10
