Test 1 Review

The test will be closed book but you may use a calculator, scratch paper, and a 4 x 6 inch notecard
with any notes or formulas written on both sides. The time limit is 90 minutes.

1. Solve the inequality |6x − 5| > 13. Give your answer in interval notation.

|6x − 5| > 13 ⇒ 6x − 5 > 13 or 6x − 5 < −13

⇒ 6x > 18 or 6x < −8
⇒ x>3 or x < −4/3

The solution set is (−∞, −4/3) ∪ (3, ∞).

2. Solve the inequality |x − 5| < 3.

|x − 5| < 3 ⇒ −3 < x − 5 < 3

⇒2<x<8

In interval form, the solution is (2, 8).

3. Solve the following equation. Make sure to list the restrictions as well.
5 3+x
=
x−2 2x − 4

3+x
The right-hand side can be written as , so the LCD for both fractions is 2(x − 2).
2(x − 2)
This means the restriction is x − 2 6= 0, so x 6= 2
Now multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD to clear fractions:
5 3+x
2(x − 2) · = 2(x − 2) · ⇒ 2·5=3+x
x−2 2x − 4
⇒ 10 = 3 + x
⇒ x=7

4. Solve for x: |3x − 7| = 12.

|3x − 7| = 12 ⇒ 3x − 7 = ±12
⇒ 3x = 7 ± 12
7 ± 12
⇒x=
3
so x = 19/3 or x = −5/3.
√ √
5. Simplify the expression (4 − 3)(4 + 3).

√ √ √ √
(4 − 3)(4 + 3) = 16 + 4 3 − 4 3 − 3
= 16 − 3
= 13

6. Find the slope-intercept equation for the line which passes through the points (−1, 3) and
(2, 7).
The slope of the line is:
7−3
m =
2 − (−1)
4
=
3
4 4 13
Using the point (−1, 3), the point-slope equation is y − 3 = (x − (−1)), which is y = x +
3 3 3
in slope-intercept form.

7. The line ` passes through the point (4, −1) and is perpendicular to the line with equation
2x + 3y = 5. Find the slope-intercept equation for `.
First find the slope of the given line:

2x + 3y = 5 ⇒ 3y = −2x + 5
2 5
⇒ y =− x+
3 3
so the first line has slope −2/3, and therefore ` has slope 3/2. Put this slope and the point
(4, −1) into point-slope form:

3 3
y − (−1) = (x − 4) ⇒ y + 1 = x − 6
2 2
3
⇒ y = x−7
2

8. Solve the radical equation 5x + 6 = x + 2.
√ √
5x + 6 = x + 2 ⇒ ( 5x + 6)2 = (x + 2)2
⇒ 5x + 6 = x2 + 4x + 4
⇒ 0 = x2 − x − 2
⇒ 0 = (x − 2)(x + 1)
⇒x=2 or x = −1

Now we need to check both answers. First x = 2:

√ √
p5x + 6 x+2 p5x + 6 x+2
√ 5(2) + 6 2 + 2 √ 5(−1) + 6 −1 + 2
16 4 1 1
4 1

Both x = 2 and x = −1 check, so both are solutions.

9. Find the standard form equation for the circle with center (−3, 9) and radius 4.
The equation is (x + 3)2 + (y − 9)2 = 16.

10. What is the midpoint of the line segment joining (13, 7) and (21, −5)?

13 + 21 7 + (−5)
The midpoint is , = (17, 1).
2 2

11. Find the center and radius of the circle with equation x2 + 6x + y 2 − 10y − 2 = 0.
We first complete the square twice to obtain the standard form equation:

x2 + 6x + y 2 − 10y − 2 = 0 ⇒ x2 + 6x + 9 + y 2 − 10y + 25 = 2 + 9 + 25
⇒ (x + 3)2 + (y − 5)2 = 36

Now that we have the standard form equation, we see that the center of the circle is (−3, 5)
and the radius is 6.

x+7
12. What is the domain of f (x) = ?
x−3
In order for the numerator to be real, x + 7 ≥ 0 so x ≥ −7. The denominator cannot be zero
so x 6= 3. Therefore the domain is [−7, 3) ∪ (3, ∞).

13. Evaluate f (0), f (10), and f (−7) if:

3x − 1 if
 x < −2
f (x) = 9 if −2≤x<5

 2
x − 1 if x≥5
f (0) = 9, f (10) = 102 − 1 = 99, and f (−7) = 3(−7) − 1 = −22.

14. Use this graph to determine the domain and range of f :

The domain is (−2, 7] and the range is [−5, 5].

15. A circle has equation (x − 10)2 + (y + 12)2 = 13. What is its center and radius?

The center is (10, −12) and the radius is 13.

17. Is the graph below the graph of a function? Briefly explain your answer.

−10

This is not the graph of a function because it fails the vertical line test.
