Our story this half term:
Oliver Twist

National Curriculum
learning objectives covered:
Week 1
 Make connections between other similar texts and prior knowledge; explore
what we know from only the title of our story.
 Participate actively in discussion about books; research of author, recording important notes.
 Find information using skimming to establish the main idea; copy of the book given out, lesson to
establish critical parts.
 Present a personal point of view based on what has been read, giving reasons.
 Recommend books to others and give reasons for recommendations.
Week 2
 Identify and explain how writers use grammatical features for effect; analyse model text.
 Identify the key points in a text; in 4 groups, draw different parts of the story.
 Prepare plays to read aloud and to perform; prior lesson groups, practice part the story.
 Use the passive voice to present information with a different emphasis; perform.
 Evaluate how effectively texts are structured and presented; draw/write synopsis of whole story.
Week 3
 Identify and comment on the writer’s choice of vocabulary; boxing up features of the model text.
 Use brackets/bullet points to list information; make simple changes to the boxed up story.
 Vary sentence structure and vocab to suit formal and informal speech and writing; draw own story
with changes made with labels and simple details.
 Prepare plays to read aloud and to perform, showing understanding through intonation, tone, vol-
ume and action; practice and performance.

 Talk about a wide range of books and text types; quiz/comprehension of Oliver Twist.

 Sustain and develop my ideas clearly; draft big write with own changes.
 Paragraphs will have an introductory sentence; edit and publish big write.
 Read books that are structured in different ways; watch film representation of Oliver and record
comparison notes.

lamp, or volume of a buzzer, is associated with the number and voltage of cells used in a cir-
cuit.

Exploring different types of switches and making one using day to day materials.
