Section 1 (50 marks):
Answer all questions in the section.

1. Use logarithms to evaluate :

2. Form the quadratic equation whose roots are x = - and x = 1 (2 Marks)

3. W varies directly as the cube of x and inversely as y. Find W in terms of x and y given that W = 80
when x = 2 and y = 5. (2 Marks)

4. A cold water tap can fill a bath in 10 minutes while a hot water tap can fill it in 8 minutes. The
drainage pipe can empty it in 5 minutes. The cold water and hot water taps are opened for 4 minutes.
After four minutes all the three taps are opened. Find how long it takes to fill the bath. (3 Marks)

5. Object A of area 10cm is mapped onto its image B of area 60cm by a transformation. Whose
matrix is given by p = ( ). Find the positive values of x (3 Marks)

10. The cost of 2 brands of coffee A and B per kilogram are 59.40 and Sh.72 respectively. The two
brands are mixed in the ratio x:y and sold at a profit of 20% above the cost. If the selling price per
kilogram mixture is Ksh.72. find the value of x and y (3mks)

11. The second and fifth terms of a geometric progression are 16 and 2 respectively. Determine the
common ratio and the first term. (3 Marks)

16. Find the radius and the coordinate of the centre of the circle whose equation is

17. The relationship between the variables a and y is believed to be y = a/x + bx. Where a and b are constants.

(b) By drawing a suitable straight line graph estimate the values of a and b (7mks)

18. (a) A triangular garden ABC is such that AB=8cm BAC=45o and ABC=75o. Using an
appropriate scale draw the garden using a ruler and a pair of compasses only (3mks)

(b) A water tap P is to be mounted in the garden that it is equal in distance from A,B and C.
on the diagram in (a) above show the position of P (3mks)

(c) A section of the plot is enclosed such that a region R is formed under the following
conditions
(i) CR1.5cm (1mk)
(ii) R is more than 2m from line AB (1mk)
(iii) R is nearer to CB than CA. shade the region R (2mks)

19. A cinema has seats for 400 people. The seats are in two catergories; A and B which are charged at
Sh.200 and Sh.500 per show respectively. The number of catergory B booked per show does not
exceed that of catergory A. for the hall expenses to be covered, atleast 70 category B seats must be
booked and they must be more than quarter of the total number of seats booked.

(a) Write down inequalities other than > < 0 and y  0 to represent the conditions satisfied by the
seats per show (4mks)

(b) Represent these inequalities on a graph (4mks)

(c) If the hall is charged at sh.45000 per day and the operator runs 3 shows per day, find the
maximum possible profit in a day (2mks)

20. For a sample of 100 bulbs, the time taken for each bulb to burn was recorded. The table below shows
the result of the measurements.

21. Two points P and Q are found on the earth’s surface the position of P is ( 52 oS,66oW) and Q ( 52oS,144oE).
Taking earth’s radius as 6370km,
(a) find the difference in longitude between the two points P and Q (1mk)

(b) (i) calculate the shortest distance between points P and q along (i) the latitutde in km (1mk)

(ii) The longitude in Km ( 4mks)

(a) A plane travelling at 800km/hr leaves point P At 10.00am and sais through south pole to point q. Find the
local time the plane arrives at point Q to the nearest minute. (4mks)

(i) Sin 3 = Cos ( + 400) (2 Marks)

(ii) 2 Cos (0 + 400) = 0 in the range 0   900 (1 Mark)

24. The gradient function of a curve is given by the expression 2x + 1. If the curve passes through the
