Meaning of Hajj

Hajj simply means pilgrimage in English language. Hajj is the fifth and the last pillars of Islam.
It implies setting out to Holy land of Makkah and engage in series of activities of Ibadah.
It is the mandatory religious duty for Muslims that must be carried out at least once in their
lifetime by all adult Muslims who are physically and financially capable of undertaking the
journey, and of supporting their family during their absence from home.

Conditions for performing Hajj

It is compulsory to perform Hajj for every Muslim who complete all the requirements for Hajj.
They are required to fulfill the following conditions which are:
1. Being Muslim,
2. Being of sound mind,
3. Reached puberty,
4. Being free,
5. Safe to pursue the journey and
6. Istita'ah.
However, there are some other conditions for performing Hajj and these are:
- Having provisions for the journey e.g. Transpiration, accommodation food cost
- Having enough time for reaching Mecca and performing the acts.
- Having enough savings to support the cost of living of family members left behind and
any other person under the pilgrim’s charge, when the pilgrim goes for Hajj.
- Having a job or business that the pilgrim can resume after returning from Hajj. Pilgrim
should be able to be financially able for day to day expenses for himself and those who
are under his support e.g. family
How Hajj is performed
There are five essentials parts of Hajj that every intending pilgrim must carry out. Hajj is
considered as invalid if one of them is missing. They are as follows:
1. IHRAM: Ihram here implies intention, physical and spiritual preparation for Hajj
at the prescribed station. The station for Ihram varies from one geographical
location to another.
2. TAWAF: Tawaf means circumambulation (going round the Ka’abah)
The following are the three types of Tawaf:
- Tawaful-Qudum: Tawaf of arrival
- Tawaful-Ifadah: the main Tawaf of Hajj (compulsory)
1
- Tawaful-Wada: Farewell Tawaf
Tawaf simply means going round the Ka’abah seven times consecutively by putting
Ka’abah at the left hand side. The intending pilgrims are expected to be in state of purity
before embarking on Tawaf and kiss the black stone as they are passing by it. They are
also expected to engage in any type of glorification of Allah during the exercise and
observe two Rak’ah, if possible at Maqama Ibrahim after the seventh round.
3. SA’Y: This implies hastening between the two mountains of Safah and Marwah.
The intending pilgrims are expected to make intention for hastening and start it
immediately after the completion of Tawaf. It is very important to say ALLAHU
AKBAR three times while climbing the two mountains and supplicate to ALLAH
while on each of them.
The above three activities of Hajj take place on eight (8) of Dhul-Hijjah, the 12th month of
Islamic calendar.
4. Al-wuquf bi A’rafah: This is the fourth essential of Hajj and the most important
among them. Al-Wuquf here means standing by the mountain of Arafah with the
intention of worship on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah. The intending pilgrims are
expected to be at the vicinity of Arafah after mid noon and engage in different
activities of worship by glorifying Allah and praying for His messenger
Muhammad (S.A.W.)
5. Ramyul-jimar: This is another essentials of Hajj and it means throwing of
Pebbles. The intending pilgrims are expected to pick (7) pebbles at Muzdalifah
where they ought to pass their night after descending from the mountain of
Arafah.
They are expected to throw those seven (7) pebbles at pillar of Aqabah on the
tenth of Dhul-Hijjah one after the other after which they should go for Tawaful-
Ifadah and make their sacrifice respectively.

Things that vitiate Hajj

Allah the most High said in Qur’an Surah 2 verse 197. “The Hajj (pilgrimage) is in the well
known months so whoever intends to perform Hajj therein then he should not have sexual
relation with his wife, nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj and whatever good
you do.
Allah knows it. And take a provision for the journey but the best provision is the fear of Allah, so
fear me O men of understanding.”
In the light of the above Qur’anic injunction, the following are things that vitiate Hajj and
Umrah:
1. Sexual intercourse
2. Committing sins
3. Fighting or violent argument
4. Intentionally omitting the essentials of Hajj or Umrah most especially standing at the
mountain of Arafah.
