The document discusses natural resources in the learner's home area of Mbundane, including renewable resources like water, crops, and sunlight, as well as non-renewable resources like crude oil, minerals, and fossil fuels. It then describes a plastic bin project made from plastic bottles and metal wires to reduce land pollution from plastics and other non-renewable materials.

Name of learner: Mqondisi Mhlope

School: Tropical Vineyard College

Candidate Number:

Cala Type: Design and Construction

Topic: The use of natural resources within my home area.

In my home area of Mbundane we have lots of natural resources that have positively affected
the livelihood of many of our people. We have renewable resources such as water which is
used for irrigation, drinking and fishing, agricultural crops which are used for textiles, food and
used as biofuels. Sunlight is also another resource that’s used for solar energy generation and
we have forests(Trees) that are used for wood products and production of paper

We also have non renewable resources such as crude oils, minerals, fossil fuels such as
coal,iron and aluminum.

Since crude oil is a non renewable resource, plastics can be produced from it. I am going to
produce a plastic bin made from empty plastic bottles of coke bottles and metal wires so as to
reduce land pollution from the throwing away of the plastics because plastic is non
biodegradable. Since the burning of plastics emits CFC’s into the atmosphere which will cause
the depletion of the ozone layer and increase the rates of emissions of the Ultraviolet radiations
which cause most of the skin cancers. Therefore this plastic bin will reduce land pollutions and
decrease rates of UV radiations. This bin will reduce the number of plastic bottles in the
environment therefore reducing land pollutions and will be used to safely dispose other material
both the ones which are recyclable and not. Metal wires are also non renewable and cause land
pollutions. They are also lethal to humans as they may cut and cause serious injuries to people.

The steps taken to produce the model

1. Collection of the plastic bottles from the surrounding areas

2. After collecting the bottles, wash them using water and soap then dry them
3. Usage of a nail to create small holes in each bottle from the ones that are going to be at
the top, middle and the bottom ones.
4. The bottles are then inserted into the long straight metal wire forming a single column.
Many columns of this type are made and arranged in a circular form in an upright
manner and are tied together using a metal wire being tied to upper ends of the
wires(connected in columns) therefore connecting the columns into a cylindrical hallow.
5. The base of this hallow is made from a metal sheet producing a plastic bottle bin.
6.

The usefulness of the plastic bin model

The bin encourages recycling of waste materials. Recycling reduces

the load on our country's landfills by re-using the materials instead of
throwing them away. Recycling also reduces our need for mining and
processing production to extract materials to replace what
doesn't.The plastic bin will reduce the need to extract new raw materials from the
Earth. That in turn lessens the harmful disruption and damage being done to the
natural world: fewer forests cut down, wild animals harmed or displaced, and less
pollution of water, soil and air from plastics or other pollutants which may cause ugly
sites.
