is:
(i) 1/9 (ii) 5/36 (iii) 1/2 (iv) 8/9

(i) 0.015 (ii) 0.028 (iii) 0.065 (iv) 0.046

(3) A high voltage circuit breaker is assumed to have constant failure rate of
λ = 8.5 x 10-6 / hr .The reliability of the breaker for 5000 hours mission is:
(i) 0.29 (ii) 0.958 (iii) 0.876 (iv) 0.910
- 0.001 t
(4) A non-repairable component has a reliability function of R (t) = e
for (t ≥ 0), the MTTF in hours is:
(i) 500 (ii) 1000 (iii) 2500 (iv) 250

(5)An electronic protective relay has a failure probability density function f (t) =
1/1000 for (0 ≤ t ≥ 1000) and a MTTF = 500 hrs, then the standard deviation is:

Question 2: (6 Marks)
Objectives: Understanding the component reliability indices calculation.

An electrical company produces distribution transformers for 11/0.4 kV local

substations. The time to failure in year of these transformers have the following
probability density function

f(t) = 200 / ( t +10)3 for t ≥ 0

(a) Derive the reliability function and determine the reliability of first year of
operation.
(b) Compute the mean time to failure (MTTF).
(c) What is the design life for a reliability of 0.95

Question 3: (6 Marks)
Objectives Understanding the application of the series - parallel approach in
reliability evaluation of practical systems.

Find the reliability of the series parallel system shown in Fig.1The elements
reliabilities are : RA = 0.96 , RB = 078 , RC = RD = 0.98 , RE = 0.97 , RF = 0.85 , RG =
RH = RI = 0.95 and RJ = 0.88.
