Chapter 1 Crop production and Management
1) Define the following :
a) Irrigation : The supply of water to crops at different intervals is called irrigation. b) Weeds: Many other undesirable plants may grow naturally along with the crops . The undesirable plants are called weeds. c) Combine: Combine is a machine which helps for harvesting and threshing. d) Crop rotation : It is a process in which we sow the different crops in each different season. such manner of cropping is called crop rotation. e) Crops : Crops are plants of the same kind that grow in large quantities of food. f) Sowing : sowing is the process of putting seeds in the soil. g) Organic manure: Manure obtained from animal and plant waste such as cattle dung, droppings is called organic manure. h) Drip system of irrigation: Falling of water drop by drop at the roots of the plants. i) Manures and fertilisers: The substances which are added to the soil in the form of nutrients for the healthy growth of plants. j) Tilling or ploughing : Process of loosening and turning of the soil.
2) What precautions are undertaken before storing the grains?
Ans: a) Grains should be dried completely b) Proper chemical treatment should be done to protect the grains from insects, pests and microorganisms
3) Name two methods to control weeds
a) Weeds are removed by hand uprooting. b) Weeds are removed by using weedicides. 4) What is the advantage of sowing seeds with a seed drill ? Ans: the advantage of sowing seeds with a seed drill is that the seeds are sown at proper depth under the soil and distance between them is uniform. 5) Why should weeds be removed? Ans: Weeds compete with the crop plants for water, nutrients apace and light and thus effect the growth of the crop. So, they should be removed. 6) Name them: a) The modern method of irrigation which is the best technique for watering fruits, plants, garden and trees: Drip Irrigation b) Name the farm machine used for threshing and harvesting both : Combine c) Main tools for ploughing: Plough, hoe and cultivator d) Manure obtained from plant and animal waste: Organic manure e) Chemical substances which are rich in particular nutrients : Fertilizers f) Name the bacterium present in the nodules of the roots of leguminous plants which fixes atmospheric nitrogen: Rhizobium g) Two latest irrigation methods which help us to use water economically: Sprinkler system and drip irrigation
