Workshop Report:

Elective Workshop -1 Carpentry


For B.Arch. 2021 Batch

Introduction:
A 2-day workshop was conducted on 2nd and 3rd March 2023 for the B.Arch. 2021 batch as
part of their "Elective Workshop -1 Carpentry" course. The workshop aimed to demonstrate and
create different types of joineries to students and give them hands-on experience in working with
wood. The workshop was conducted by Chief Carpentry Trainer of Utharam, Mr Baskaran under the
guidance of Faculty in Charge Assistant Professor-Ar. Muhammed Sayyaf AC.

Workshop Content:
The workshop started with an introduction to Mr Baskaran, who comes from an ancestral
family of carpenters and has vast experience in temple architecture and traditional Kerala wooden
roofing. He explained the basics of making joinery and demonstrated various types of joinery such as
the dovetail joint, mortise and Tenon joint, and the lap joint. Students were given the opportunity to
practice making these joints and received feedback from Mr Baskaran.
In addition, the trainer provided a hands-on experience in using different types of tools such
as the chisel, saw, and hammer to make the joints.
Practical Session:
The practical session involved students designing their own models and then building them
using wood. Students were asked to give their models to the trainer, who then assisted them in
building the models with wood. The trainer ensured that each student received individual attention
and guidance in their building process, helping them to build their models to a high standard.

Outcome:
The workshop was well received by the students, who appreciated the opportunity to work
with wood and learn about joinery. Students gained a valuable insight into the practical aspects of
carpentry and were able to apply the theoretical knowledge they had gained in their course to real-
world situations.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the "Elective Workshop -1 Carpentry" was a success, and the students gained
valuable hands-on experience in working with wood and building their models. The trainer's vast
experience and knowledge in carpentry were invaluable, and students received individual attention
and guidance throughout the workshop. The workshop was an excellent opportunity for students to
gain practical experience in carpentry and provided them with a valuable skill set to apply in their
future careers.
