TUTORIAL 1

1. Explain temporary structure in construction works.

 Construction projects often require the use of temporary works to provide access or
protection to workers or the public, to protect adjacent structures, to support
temporary loads during construction.
 Example : excavation support systems, underpinning, scaffolds, bracing and shoring,
formwork, falsework, work platforms, decking, roof protection and structure used in
on-site contractor facilities.

2. Give 4 temporary structure in construction activities.

 Scaffolding
 Bracing and Shoring
 Formwork
 Roof Protection

3. State the utilities work during construction activities.

 Utilities are generally considered to include : electricity, gas, water and sewage and
communications services.

4. Describe the method of statement for brick walls works.

 A wall is a continuous vertical brick or stone structure that encloses or divides an
area of land.
 All brick walls shall have G.I expended/exmet mesh reinforcement with 750mm x
5mm diameter brickwork dowel bar complete with 75mm right angle bent to hook
onto brickwork at every 4th course.
 Unless otherwise specified or shown on the Drawings, the whole of the brickwork
shall be constructed with standard size clay bricks in mortar as described and the
surface left ready for plastering.
 Separate samples of each type of bricks and blocks taken at random from the load,
shall be submitted to the S.O. for approval before the bricks and blocks are used.
 All subsequent delivery shall generally be up to the standard of the samples approved.
 No soft, broken, twisted or otherwise defective bricks and blocks will be permitted
to be used.

5. List the characteristics of building wall.

 Stability
 Strength
 Weather Protection
 Fire Resistance
 Noise Resistance
6. As a Inspector of Work, you should do an inspection for hollow block walling. Identify 3
criteria to check the hollow block before to be used.
 Shall not be soaked but dipped in water before laying.
 Shall be laid in the manner specified for brick wall.
 Shall be reinforced at every second course with reinforcement commencing one
course above floor level.

7. Explain the method of construction for clay brick walling.

 Clay bricks shall be soaked in a suitable tank or pit to be provided by the contractor
for at least half an hour before being laid and shall be kept wet whilst being laid. The
top of of walls left off shall be throughly wet before work is resumed. All constructed
walling must be left wet and properly protected from the direct sunlight during the
following day. The contrctor shall provide sufficient means to ensure that this is
done.

8. Skecth the position on lintel beam.

9. Skecth the position of fasteners or camps to be used in construction activities.

10. State 2 types of construction method of roof.
 Install in Site
 Pre-Fabricated Trusses
i. Cold Form Steel Truss : made up of either proprietary or standard c-shaped
members, formed from flat steel and attached together with screws, bolts,
or welds.
ii. Timber Truss : Sawn timbers that are kiln-dried, preservative treatment
through computerized controlled double vacuum process, and fabrication
into trusses using patent Gang-Nail fixing system.

11. List 2 examples of pre-fabricated cold form steel truss.

 C-shaped members
 Formed from flat steel

12. State all step for inspection of heat insulation.

 Samples of the insulation material shall be submitted to the S.O. for approval before
they are used.
 Delivery shall be up to the standard of samples approved.
 All punctures shall be effectively sealed with similar reflective material to prevent air
leakage and moisture transfer.
 The reflective surface shall be free from any thin film of oil, plastic or lacquer coatings.
 All dustand/ or trademarks shall be limited to a maximum of 5% of the total
reflective areas.
 The insulation shall be fitted closely around electrical outlet boxes, plumbing etc and
taped securely to eliminate gaps or voids through which air or water vapour might
pas into the cooler space.

13. List all the inspection to be done during installation fascia and barge boards.
 Unless otherwise shown on the Drawings, fascia and barge boards shall be 25 mm
thick wrot timber and supplied in long lengths.
 The boards shall be fixed in whole lengths and where joints are necessary, they shall
be scarfed jointed and the joints shall occur only over the ends of roof framing
members and mitred corners.
 Board, 250 mm wide and less shall be in one width and those deeper shall be
formed by multiple of boards jointed together by tongue and groove and ‘V’ joint.

14. Give 4 documents and records that contractor shall submit to the Superintendent Officer
(SO) during supervision of metal works.
 Delivery schedules and method statments
 Certificate for materials and consumables
 Calibration of equipment
 Inspection and test report
15. During water proof works, the inspection witness points shall be done by the Inspector of
Work.
 All areas prepared to receive waterproofing.
 All joints prior to sealing.
 Those parts of the waterproofing installation which will be covered up or concealed.
 Hold points Completion of confirmation prototypes.
 Completion of all ponding tests.

16. List all the criteria to be inspect for water proofing works.
 Tests
- Carry out all tests in accordance with standards.
- Carry out ponding test to all areas as directed by the Engineer to test the water
tightness of the waterproofing systems installed. In the event of the failure of
the ponding tests, the Contractor shall bear the cost of all necessary remedial
works.
- Re-test all areas on completion of remedial work following a failed ponding test.

 Ponding Tests
- Flood all areas subject to a ponding test to the greatest depth of water possible,
minimum 50mm.
- Retain the water in place for 48 hours.
