Introduction
l This course covers the basic calculus
and its application to problems in
science and engineering.

l Basic Calculus is the study of

differentiation and integration.

2
Motion planning

Week 1

• Functions

• Overview of study topics.

3
Functions

l Functions are fundamental to the study of

calculus.
l In this chapter we review what functions
are and how they are pictured as graphs,
how they are combined and transformed,
and ways they can be classified.

4
Functions

In this notation, the symbol ƒ represents the function, the letter x

is the independent variable representing the input value of ƒ,
and y is the dependent variable or output value of ƒ at x.

The set D of all possible input values is called the domain of the
function. The set of all output values of ƒ(x) as x varies throughout
D is called the range of the function.

Common Functions

• Linear Functions
• Power Functions
• Polynomials
• Rational Functions
• Algebraic Functions
• Trigonometric Functions
• Exponential Functions
• Logarithmic Functions

7
Linear Functions
l A function of the form ƒ(x) = mx + b, for
constants m and b, is called a linear function.

8
Power Functions

9
Power Functions

square root and cube root functions

10
Polynomials

11
Rational Functions
A rational function is a quotient or ratio ƒ(x) = p(x)/q(x),
where p and q are polynomials.

12
Algebraic Functions
Any function constructed from polynomials using algebraic
operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and
taking roots) lies within the class of algebraic functions.

13
Trigonometric
Functions
The six basic trigonometric functions

14
Trigonometric
Functions
Angles are measured in degrees or
radians.
