UNIT TEST 8 ● ANSWER KEY

Writing

Can write a structured text clearly signalling main points and supporting details.

Sample answer

Dear Editor,
I am contacting you after reading your article about spending time in the natural environment. Having just
returned from a trip to the mountains near my hometown, I have personally seen both the benefits and
drawbacks of encouraging people to spend time outdoors.
It’s undeniable that the mountains near my village are beatiful and many people want to go there to take
photos and sit by the mountain streams. Listening to the water running down the hills is relaxing and people
feel good when they breathe the fresh air and hear the birds singing.
Unfortunately, there are too many tourists and this is having a negative impact on the environment. There is a
small road which leads to a mountain lake, and whilst cars are not permitted, many people drive there
anyway. There is a lot of litter in the area and plants and trees are being damaged by people who don’t stay on
the paths.
Without a doubt, the local community needs to do something to improve the situation. I think a tourist centre
should be built to teach people how to look after the environment. What’s more, people should be employed
to look after the area. This could trigger other similar areas to spend more time and money looking after
nature.
Yours faithfully,
Saun Daniels
