Difference between the single and dual base station configura-

tions
A single base station covers the 180º area facing it. Loss of position
may occur when you turn your back to the base station. When two
base stations are arranged in face-to-face positions, a 360º coverage
is realized, so the player in between the two base stations can enjoy
free movement without loss of positioning.
In light of the game type, many games have been designed for 180º
area, so a single base station will suffice. The dual base station
configuration supports the games for both 180º and 360º areas, so
the compatibility experience is better. If the user has bought one
base station, another base station can be bought later to upgrade
the configuration into dual base stations.

8
Polaris base station indicators
The status indicators have the following meanings:
Blue on: The master base station is in normal mode.
Blue flash: The master base station is just started up or unstable due
to some shake.
Green on: The slave base station is in normal mode.
Green flash: The slave base station is just started up, or fails to
receive signals from the master base station, or is unstable due to
some shake.
Red: The slave base station has internal fault.
Red flash: The base station does not work normally due to
interference from other base stations.

4. Polaris controller
Introduction
The Polaris controller is used for interacting with objects within the
VR world. It has sensors that are traceable by the Polaris base
station.

Hint: Several laser sensors are located in the circular region at the
tip of the controller. Be sure that the laser sensors receive well laser
signals from the base station, do not cover the circular region at the
controller tip with any extra material. In addition, keep the sensors
at the controller tip clear of blocking by hands or any other items.

Base station calibration purpose

Base station calibration location calibration: The calibration

process described here allows accurate calculations for the
mounting orientation, height, tilt and relative positioning between
dual base stations. When the base station is mounted and
calibrated once, no more calibration is required as long as the
mounting status (location, orientation, height, tilt) remains
unchanged.

Base station coverage

The coverages of a single base station and dual base stations are
shown below:

8. Gaming zone
What is the gaming zone?
The gaming zone is the virtual boundaries for gaming motions.
All your interactions with the VR objects will be performed within
the gaming zone.
Plan the gaming zone
Before the planning, make sure there is enough space.
The room scale shall allow at least a 2mx2m gaming zone. See the
example below:

Choose the gaming zone

Find a space for the gaming zone and do the followings to achieve
the optimal experience:
• Move furniture, pets and other items out of the gaming zone.
• Place your computer near the gaming zone. The headset cable is
5m to the computer.
• Make sure power socket is available nearby for the Polaris base
station.
• Do not expose the headset to direct sunshine, because the
headset screen may be damaged.

Scenario mode
The gaming zone has two scenario modes: ROOM-SCALE mode and
STANDING ONLY mode.

ROOM-SCALE mode is applicable when the current gaming zone is

large. In this mode, the headset will display the system-recom-
mended gaming zone boundaries. When the headset is close to the
boundaries, the boundary lines will be highlighted within the
headset to remind the user.
The STANDING ONLY mode is applicable for the standing or sitting
position when the area is relatively small. It allows quick
calibration on the ground and start of the game. In this mode, it is
not recommended to walk around during the game.

Hint: If the boundary reminding is not set, it may cause personal

injury or device damage during the game playing.

For the game with standing or sitting position experience, it is

generally not required to set the room scale, so please choose
STANDING ONLY mode.

47

complete the setup.

49
Verify setup

After the E3 Polaris setup process is completed, you may wear the
headset and grab the Polaris controllers to explore the VR.

What is the space size recommended for the gaming zone?

Motion within maximum 6m diagonal area is supported. For the
Room Scale setup, the gaming zone shall be at least 2mx2m. For
the experience in standing/sitting position, there is no required for
minimum space.

Can the furniture footprint be included in the gaming zone?

We do not recommend that. In planning the boundary for the
gaming zone, make sure there is no obstacle on the floor.
Do not include the space occupied by desk or chair. They may trip
you during your VR exploration.

For the VR application applicable only for standing/sitting

position, is it applicable for Room Scale setup as well?
Even though you have the Room Scale setup, you can still use the
VR application that has been designed for standing/sitting
position, as long as the headset and Polaris controllers can be
traced within the gaming zone.

To set or reset the standing status in the VR, execute the following
steps:
1. Press the Menu button on the controller to bring the main
control panel of the Steam VR system.
2. Select Setup ->VR setup.
3. Select New Standing Status, and complete the process by
following the on-screen instructions.
