I. Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using contextualized reading materials

in improving the reading proficiency level of Grade IV learners. A pre-experimental research

design was used, and the statistical tool utilized was the Mann Whitney U test. The study's

sample consisted of Grade IV learners from a selected school. The study's research questions

were: (1) What is the initial reading proficiency level of Grade IV pupils as measured by the pre-

test? (2) What is the reading proficiency level of Grade IV pupils after utilizing the

contextualized reading materials as measured by the post-test? (3) Is there a statistically

significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results? The study's objectives were to

improve the reading proficiency level of Grade IV pupils by utilizing contextualized reading

materials and to enhance their phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and

fluency skills in reading. The study's findings showed that the use of contextualized reading

materials improved the reading proficiency of the grade IV learners. The null hypothesis was

rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. The study recommends the use of

contextualized reading materials as a tool to enhance reading proficiency in Grade IV learners.
